I actually have a Follower of Astrau or whatever the meep he called it as I mocked it. (OK so you're a viking, and that makes me a pirate?) Playing devil's advocate, I kind of get what they're saying. Imagine if they made a movie based on an African legend, and cast a white dude as an African god, the meep storm that would start. Playing devil's-devil's advocate, there's enough white people in movies already, so no one would give a meep if that didn't happen.

Mmm actually Heimdallr is referred to in the Poetic Eddas as "the white god." I myself am and Asatruar and while I dont agree with many of the things this group says I do believe that Heimdallr was made black on purpose. Whether it was to deflect any criticism for being a white supremacist movie or as a meep to white supremacists I dont know.

Well, my Nordic friend, you are partly correct. He is repeatedly referred to as the "White-Clad" or "Bright" god (most likely co-responding to Venus in the sky).

In Pigot's translation of the Oehlenschlger Heimdall is bade by the other gods to guard the bridge, BiFrost:

"Bifrost i' th' east shown forth in the brightest green;
On it's top, in snow white sheen,
Heimdall at his post was seen."

Seemingly a reference to the "Green Flash" sometimes observed at sunset ( or sunrise) and believed in multiple cultures to be a glimpse into the "next world".

Heimdall, in both Snorri's Eddas, and later in Smunds Edda (quoted here, Thorpes translation) is seen:
"...always clad in resplendent white armor, and was therefore called the bright god, as well as the light, innocent, and graceful god, for he was as good as beautiful and all the gods loved him. Connected on his mother's side to the sea, he was sometimes counted among the Vanas. He was further distinguished by his gold teeth, which flashed when he smiled, and won him the named "Gullintani" (golden-toothed). He rode the swift, golden-maned steed "Gull-top" and crossed Bifrost many times a day, but particularly in the early morn, when he was considered a herald of the day, and bore the name of Heim-dellinger.

He had great teeth & shiny pants, but no where does it say he was a tighty whitey. He was still the spawn of three-quarter of a dozen sea giantesses, who are notoriously dark in the crevices...sort of like Mr. Clean. He wears all white and shaves his head so you don't notice he's Lebanese.

I picture a spawn of the ocean's giantesses' more like this, but in Spanky's armor, and with a meepin' Gold-Tooth Grill, like somebody out of an old "Dirty Harry" or "Sanford & Son".

I think, BG, if they went into so much detail about him and listing his virtues I'd think that something like being something other than white would have been at the top of the description list. The Norse were pretty much the whitest people on Earth so why would they a.) have a black skinned god and b.) if they did why would they not say so? Outside of very long distance raiding parties they would have had zero contact with blacks so having one of their major deities be described as black with a broad nose and kinky hair would have been something of note. As for the sea giantesses they are obviously humanoid in form. Njord, the god of the seas, is described to be a bearded man with the most beautiful feet of all the gods, not flippers. The gods are as much a reflection of their people as they are of them.

Source? "The Norse"? I am quoting from the only known original texts we have from "The Norse", translated from the highest scholars, in direct language, after many years of research. As far as I can tell, you are repeating what you have been told by other white folks (of whom I am one...Danish/Norwegian/German) who learned from digested tales and folk books.

I am using the same or similar sources, I have my copies of the Poetic and Prosaic Eddas and the Icelandic Sagas next to me as we speak. There are, really, few other sources. These sources may be after the fact but you must realize that Iceland was a very isolated country for almost its entire history, so much so that their language is virtually unchanged from that of the Early Medieval Period Scandinavian settlers so I think that maybe synthesizing the description of the gods would be within their scope. I refer to them as the Norse since Scandinavians up until the 13th century spoke a common or at least mutually intelligible languages along with a virtually identical culture.
