i would also like to temper my gleaming praise of the site, there is at least one study that they didn't look at very critically before reporting on it.

nevertheless, provides very good guidance on quite a few topics

dude please don't mock my sperglord tendencies it's embarrassing!!

Indeed.

Here's what I learned that was new: - Drinking your whey protein before the workout leads to better absorption - If you got to drink protein after the workout, wait a bit - Eat your meeping fish oil and drink onion juice - Green tea, mothermeeper. Do it.

in case anyone cares, i'll put a few golden rules here that everyone should follow forever:

a basic list of things that are agreed upon as being safe, cheap, and beneficial.

for everyone

  • fish oil. you can't take too much, it's not that expensive. at worst it does nothing, at best it's practically a meep health miracle. i take 10-20 grams/day.
  • green tea. the jury is out on coffee: there is a convoluted debate which i won't detail, but it may be awful for you. juice is literally killing you, and honestly you should consider the effects of fructose. if you drink soda, meep you. green tea is great for you. theanine is an amino acid which tempers the effects of caffeine; the net effect is it helps your stress levels. an overtaxed CNS is the direct and indirect cause of some serious maladies, from heart disease to obesity to cancer. i wouldn't necessarily spend money on theanine supplements, but drink as much green tea as you want.
  • vitamin D3. the only vitamin D you should look for. your body produces D3 endogenously with sun exposure, but if you're indoors a lot (lol internet) or it's winter, take at least 2,000 iu/day. cheap, tiny pills. you CAN overdose and get sick, do not take vitamin D if you are getting sun exposure.

for athletes/weight training

  • whey protein. trueprotein.com has amazing deals on bulk, but you can buy it wherever if you consider that it should be under about $10/pound. also look at nutrition label, check serving size against protein (ie serving size: 30 grams, protein: 28 grams; big differences between the two numbers mean fillers and sugars and carbs). if you weight train it's a convenient way to supplement food intake. also very safe and effective.
  • creatine. cheap, tasteless, mixes with water, gives a very slight performance boost. if you care about 2 extra reps or whatever, not a bad way to do it.

There's a million fish oil products out there. What should I look for specifically? Or does it matter?

it kinda sorta matters. i buy from trueprotein.com, they send a big meep plastic container. you oughta just get the cheapest fish oil that you feel like would be from a trustworthy source.

some people get fish burps, and you can get enteric coated in that case, but otherwise it just costs more for basically nothing.

i've thought about liquid fish oil instead of capsules, and carlsson makes a few flavored ones, but i have yet to actually do it.
