Wolfer, in a nutshell, to move forward one must accept and acknowledge the past. Dismissing it or telling someone to get over it is the opposite of that paradigm. It is actually the process of belittling and minimalizing another's experience for your own benefit. Your attitude, much like most whitebreds I know and grew up with, fails to recognize that crucial step in the process. Perhaps you didn't actually commit the crime of enslavement, but dismissing the modern impact of that historical event is a disservice and affront to those families that were directly affected by the event, even as recent as forty years ago.

When you and the other whitebreds actually change that attitude, things will start getting better.

And don't you think that courtesy, compared to the murder, rape, and enslavement that 'our' previous generations committed to another person/group is a small change that we could make for someone else's benefit?

Maybe the next time you are out and about, consider that the African American man sitting next to you at a restaurant had his mother hosed down or Daddy beaten IN THIS COUNTRY. Then think if its too much to ask to recognize that hurt and event. If you still don't get it, just imagine your own grandmother being forced to suck some white master's meep against her will or being forced to use the back entrance to ANY restaurant in the city, then see if you would still be pissed at that history.

WE have history, folks. There's no escaping the fact that about 12 million blacks were brought over against their will.

It changes nothing that a large number were sold by competing tribesmen (and a very small percentage by their own kings for criminal behavior.) By order of scale, the Portuguese (and Brazilians), the British, the French, the Spanish, the Dutch, and the North Americans were all active in, or complicit with the systematic kidnapping and transport of these people as part of the atlantic slave trade.

This wasn't perpetrated merely by southern whites. It was happening world-wide and was part of the fabric of civilization at the time. All of them were taken from the land they knew and used like livestock.

But that time is past.

We have been born, my friends, in a time of healing. We are all equal now under the law.

Now blacks have to decide for themselves whether it's better to dwell on the past, pursue vengeance and seek restitution, or move on with their lives with an appreciation for the struggles of their forebears and reach for better things.

Why is it that today's white guys have to hear how evil they are because white guys in the past did bad things to the black guys. How many thousands of white guys died in the civil war in defense of the black guys? That never seems to come up for some reason.

'Me ' 28 little Niglets..'....meeping hilarious!

We went out in 2nd grade to a cotton gin, and picked a couple handfuls of cotton (no, we didn't get to keep it, either) in the field, and it was hot out, and there were a couple of black kids, as well as a couple of Mexican kids in the class, and NOBODY went home and whined to their folks about slavery or being a po' little cotton-picker, and NOBODY'S parents came to school and meeped about exploitation or humiliation of the races.

Still, this young man can tell a good story, funny as a rubber crutch. Happy little monkey man.
