Will A Huge Asteroid Hit Antarctica In 2012?
A University of British Columbia Professor published an online article that projected an 800m asteroid would hit Antarctica in the fall of 2012. His article was on the www.phas.ubc.ca website for 2 days before it abruptly disappeared...

There's a new apocolypse prediction every other year, so we have a roughly 50/50 chance that, sooner or later, one of them will be correct. When that day comes, I will be too annoyed at everyone proclaiming the accuracy of the prophesy that I won't be able to appreciate my approaching doom.

For fun, explain how, given infinite years, and one prediction per year, we have a 1 in 2 chance of a human accurately predicting the apocalypse?

There is actually a zero percent chance of anyone successfully predicting an apocalypse... unless there's actually an apocalypse. You're saying it's a given it'll happen any year now and some lucky person will have stabbed blindly at it. Moron.

I disagree on the zero percent chance. Astronomers can accurately predict an approaching asteroid that would be about destroy most of the life on this planet, if one were approaching, probably quite accurately. But here's the thing: they wouldn't be allowed to tell us... which is kind of what this link is about.
Also, it's not just here.
Also, also, I agree that Richard_Parker is a backpedaling moron.

The world's gotta end sometime. Sooner or later the sun will explode, and someone, somewhere, will have predicted the year. Maybe we'll be out of the solar system by then. Probably not.
Or our species will last forever, as you say.

Oh, oh, so, if you wave the hands, really hard, and you throw out the entire body of the assertion, then the statement, she kinda works.
So anyways, that's probability in a nutshell, class! Science.

More hand-waving pseudo-intellectual doodoo. Frankly, I'm surprised. Generally you seem capable of understanding when your BS has been detected and you then immediately pivot to firmer ground for at least the next couple limp-wristed ripostes.
Please define 'that thing you do'. Be specific. I consider this homework since I'm pretty sure you don't have the answer yet and were counting on not being asked.
