Actually, slowly removing the oxygen from the room -- slow suffocation -- would I believe be much like dying from the cold... just no cold.

I had asthma growing up, and I've had bouts of pnumonia that nearly killed me.

I can tell you from experience that suffocating from having your lungs being unable to absorb oxygen is not nearly as bad as choking on water or having your breathing reflex stifled.

Your mind goes numb. There might be some discomfort, but it seems far away. (I imagine it's the sensation that people huffing paint are after.)

Not sure where I originally got the idea but anecdotal confirmation is good to find. I suspect having the O2 slowly leak out of a place, as in a sealed-off cave, would be even less alarming.
