Why Many Blacks Can't Swim

A close high school friend of mine, who was black, drowned a couple of years ago. He was fishing off a relatively short causeway and slipped on a slimy rock and fell into water about 10 feet deep. He was with another black friend, who could have saved him if HE knew how to swim.

It's almost an epidemic.

Part of Navy bootcamp was dropping off a highdive into a pool. There were divers in the opposite end of the pool and a guy with a pole standing by to drag anybody out that panicked or just sank like a rock.

I watched a black guy climb up(looking pretty confident), but as soon as he hit that water he was flailing and screaming like it was meeping boiling lava or something.

The guy with the pole reached out with it and instead of just grabbing it one-handed and letting himself get pulled to the poolside(saving at least a little dignity) that guy hugged the pole, wrapping his arms and legs around the thing in a blind panic.

Nobody laughed.

It was actually too sad and pathetic to be funny even to sailors.

In elementary school we had mandatory YMCA swimming classes (it used to be common in shore area Michigan schools) to teach kids how to at least doggy paddle in an emergency. I learned to swim there as did all of my friends except a couple of the black ones. They were literally petrified of the water and would scream and cry if they found themselves actually in it over their heads. One of them eventually learned to doggy paddle but the other ended up getting excused from the classes because it was apparently so traumatic for him. *shrug

Having been in the Detroit area for most of my life, I can tell you for a fact that most of the blacks I interact with do not swim and most of them will openly admit that they can't.

WTF!!! And so they take their children to the beach and watch them drown?

I'm sure it has to do with a long history of segregated pools, making generations of blacks clueless when it came to swimming in this country. I'm also guessing that the lack of pools and lakes in inner cities are a factor. Oh, and what Godevil said.

apparently they haven't figured out how to get off of haiti, but there are so many meeping jamacians everywhere i wonder how effective the island prison .... i mean colony.... i mean prison colony would work

I love this, because, it is meeping true. I have often wondered what was up with the non-swimming abilities.. the slavery/ ship issue was my theory. Sad, perhaps, but true.

Everyone who pushed words into this internet thread during this exercise is a racist meep colored people hater.
