Lots of details left out of a complicated issue. For instance, there's no doubt that they're using some of the big, extremely wasteful US farms as examples-but they aren't distinguishing between organic, free-range, etc. in any meaningful way. And to claim that organic means that the chickens will have 100 times the pcbs...that's just making the assumption that all land is poisoned, its not. They got a sample from some heavily polluted area and generalized. Poor science reporting.

This article hardly belongs in a high school newspaper let alone Time First of all, the primary way they measure egg quality/nutrition is a 'Haugh unit', developed in 1937.... 1930's scientific reasoning is what you find in modern Texas schoolbooks to teach children why blacks should drink from separate water fountains. Surely they could find one other modern metric, or maybe even develop one. The science of nutrition has come a LONG way since the 30's. Second, on the antibiotics question they admit 'There's just very little research I've seen on this.' On the contaminants question they found ONE farm with a wood processing plant nearby and found levels of PCB's 100x the average. Gee gully, what extraordinary sample sets. I wonder if someone who sits on the board of time magazine has an uncle in the factory farmed chicken industry or something because this article smells as bad as a factory chicken farm(one of the worst smells I've ever encountered).

The problem with 'organic' livestock is the fact the the officially recognized definition of 'organic' and the qualifications required to be certified as an 'organic' food producer aren't defined in a manner that promote healthy livestock.
One can stuff a sick chicken into an egg farm battery cage and feed it nothing but pure 'organic' corn feed (which is a reality) and be certified as an organic egg producer. One can then stack other chicken cages above the first in order to maximize production floorspace utilization and allow the chickens to meep all over each other while producing 'organic' eggs. The chicken will be sick for it's entire short life and the eggs it produces will be 'organic' but just as meeping disgusting as any other battery egg farm eggs.
The story is similar for 'Free Range' certification. To qualify, one must allow chickens to have access to open farmland. The problem is, it doesn't define for how long they should have access. Nor does it spell out any requirements for housing. Therefor one could keep 300,000 chickens cramped into a standard chicken production barn, wallowing in their own meep, dead chickens, disease and filth while being fattened to the point that they can't even walk - but as long as the doors are open to the outside world for a while, they're 'free range' chickens in the eyes of the FDA. Never mind the fact that they aren't even capable of walking.
Never believe a sign in a grocery store. If you want organic or free range, go to a credible source (a local farm) and buy from a supplier that isn't a mega-corporation. Credible sources will be more than happy to let you see how they raise their livestock because they don't have any dirty, disgusting secrets to hide. The same cannot be said for most of the 'organic' and 'free range' suppliers that game a bullmeep system in order to maximize their corporate profit margin with overpriced products bearing trendy labels.

We have actually done blindfold A/B tests and all the test subjects were able to distinguish the taste of organic vs non-organic fried eggs. Both were from Trader Joe's.
