Beck knew he didn't have to write anything worth reading since most of his fans can barely read or comprehend anything more complicated than the IHop menu and 9/11.

It's true. It's as much as indictment of his readers as Beck himself.

I love the thing where, at many points, his little play reality is fractured (Molly has improbably read the entire guest list, but then five minutes later, for meaningless filler, Molly has no idea who attended) and no one questions either its substance or presence.

At least, assuming there's a satisfied readership for the book, which must consist largely of the most biddable and uncritical of his audience members, or at least excellent candidates therefor.

perhaps my greatest fear is writing dialogue like ayn rand. for exactly this reason.

According to one of the commenters, books like this get on bestseller lists because there are wealthy conservative organizations who buy thousands of copies when a pundit puts out a book, and then sell them off at a loss to true patriots who turn them into bumper stickers for their living rooms.

most 'bestsellers' are sold in bulk shipments to costco, bookstores, etc. publishers buy them back.

^This. The publishing industry, much like most other sectors of our economy, is a farce.

Amen to the best sellers being a farce. I work in publishing. The numbers we report are 'dirty sales', meaning that if a whole boatload of books is ordered and waterdamaged before they reach the buyer, both the original boatload AND the replacement boatload are reported as 'sold copies'. In contrast, we pay royalties on 'clean sales', so only the 2nd boatload counts when we pay the author. Long live capitalism!

I'm now going to rape every book publishing executive with a volume of my Encyclopedia Britannicas. I may turn some inside out, so they get deep paper cuts.

They'll learn not to meep with reality.
