Everybody's so excited about this, but to put this in perspective, the US would need fourteen of these suckers to pay off our debt.

Translation: the United States finally found the mineral deposits it was looking for.

The Soviets knew about it in the 80s, so it stands to reason AMERICA also knew.

Gonna be a fooferaw over this.. It's supposed to be 'Saudi Arabia of lithium', and technology is currently dependent on it. There's not gonna be an 'after the war', 'til several other players have joined in to duke it out, 'cuz he who controls the spice controls the universe.

Afghanistan supplies 60% of the worlds heroin. That's a $600 billion market.
The Afghan people see less than 1% of this money as it gains 100 times it's price from the farmer on it's way to the UK and US.
This vast sum of money goes into the pockets of the people who keep the supply routes secure (CIA) and the people who launder the money (international bankers), who split about 60% and organised crime syndicates who distribute it and street dealers who sell it who split the remaining 40%.
If the Afghan people were to change from an opium based to a raw materials based economy it would mean a huge loss of revenue to some pretty big players and so will simply not happen.
Somebody will certainly develop the resource but the Afghans will be needed in the fields.

As long as I get my thrice daily 20 sack, I could care less how it's grown and distributed.
