Local Harvest: How To Find Better Food

Local Harvest is a great resource for wage slaves to use to find local farmers markets, family run farms and locally grown organic foods. These businesses are more common that you might think and patronizing them is both economically and environmentally sound. Not to mention, the food is highest quality of food available in this country. Use this.

Free Range eggs require a lot of land to produce. That makes them expensive. 6$ a dozen is about as expensive as they get but it's really a geographic issue related to supply. The demand for them is quite high because they taste 100 times better than factory eggs but if you live in an area that has no competition, that demand drives the price way up. It's a great thing for the boutique farmer but it sucks for the people that want those eggs.

Luckily, I live in an area that allows me to get pretty much everything I want locally when it's in season and there's even a couple of local hot-houses that provide off-season produce at excellent prices.

I'm sure that you can find a beef ranch within a decent driving distance. It's worth it to drive a bit when you're going to buy bulk. That's the way to save money anyway. A whole pig or a half a cow is a great way to purchase farm raised meat.

Too bad people are so squeamish about their food these days because it would mean a meep of a better market for the local and independent food merchant. Much more like they have over in Britain.

Ya plonker.

The best open market I have ever seen was the Pike Street Market in Pioneer Square, Seattle. It's busy as meep and full of excellent, fresh, healthy food. It would be great to have something that big available to everyone in all major cities. I think Americans have gotten way too far away from their food sources. It seems a bit creepy and gross to be eating animals that were grown in factories, and yet Americans don't give it a second though while browsing the meat section.

I can get farm fresh eggs all summer for $2/doz if you save the cartons. There's an overabundance and most people just sell them to avoid feeding them back to their overabundance of chickens.
