The city of Flint experienced more fires overnight, and now surrounding fire departments are telling Flint firefighters they're on their own.

Cities like Burton, Davison and Clio are among the departments saying they're not going to offer mutual aid anymore.

The Grand Blanc Fire Commission is expected to take up the question of continued mutual aid later this month.

Flint has been overwhelmed by dozens of fires, many suspected to be arson, since 23 firefighters were laid off last week.

I don't think there's any question that there is a strong possibility that it's one or more disgruntled firefighters starting some of these fires, if not most of them. These guys have been understaffed and over worked for 25 years or more. I guess I can understand the type of frustration and anger that could cause one or more of them to pull this stunt as a way of making a point.

On the other hand, I can better understand the surrounding areas refusing to help. They are understaffed and over worked as well... why should they have to respond to fires, on a regular basis, in a nearby city that has fired a large percentage of it's already understaffed emergency response force? ...and although they bill Flint for their efforts, I'm quite certain that Flint takes it's sweet time paying bills, since the reason it's understaffed is because it can't pay it's bills. I mean, the city has only been financially busted for 30 odd years or so.

This is all the result of a nation that is watching the industrial infrastructure and way of life in many of it's major cities decline without it being replaced by something. The saddest part is that Flint is an early warning; an example of what is to come in many other cities in this country. With unemployment numbers steadily creeping toward the 20 million mark, it won't be long before there is a Flint, MI near you.
