On average, about 200 people are killed by lightning in the United States every year.
about 1% of all lightning deaths in the U.S. are a result of people talking inside the home on a corded phone during a thunderstorm.
So, 2 people a year? I think I'll take my chances.
Had lightning strike 5 feet in front of my car at a stop street once, the flash and noise scared the meep out of me, I jumped in my seat and my head hit the car roof. Unbelievable power, you could smell it in the air afterwards, very strange.

Got to see a monster movie calibre lightning storm meep-kick Gallup, from the safety of a Santa Fe hotel parking lot, packed with a zillion Porsches (cuz wealthy people with nice cars do that meep) about 25 years ago. Very cool. I'm likee lightnin' storms.
