Just picked this book up and started reading it...

Author makes a pretty interesting case for why the North Koreans are so meeping wierd; that they've basically created a series of lurid state myths for themselves as a way of identifying themselves as a people. That's not the wierd part itself -- it's the mental acrobatics you have to perform to accept the entire set of myths, since they don't make any meeping sense. e.g., North Koreans are innocent, pure, childlike and naive... yet America surrendered to North Korea out of sheer terror in the '50s. It's Potemkin village turned inside out.

Well it's true, those comments have tons of anti-americanism; this is consistent with rising nationalism levels.

In modern Russian slang, there are even two words for Americans:

'Amerikos' is generally derogatory and often stands for something like a 'dumb American.' 'Kos' is possibly a reference to being cross-eyed, but may equally be a latinofication (like gring-os).
