All I know of the Navy is a friend who was in during the late 70s. He mentions Panama Red frequently.

I joined just as all the things that my recruiters said were reasons to serve went away. Drug testing and the Tailhook incident meeped a lot of meep up, and I was so poised to smoke the California grass. The whole fleet shut down for a week for meepual harassment training,after which you could be written up and discharged for calling your shipmate a meep. Then the old tradition of hazing was done away with. I was one of the last guys who crossed the Equator and did the Honorable Shellback ceremony,So I ate menthol shaving cream and sardines for breakfast that day, and was beaten senseless for resisting. The fleet was never a good place for females when I was in because an awful lot of them join for the wrong reasons, and did not care about their career and the fleet.The ones I had joined to get out of their hometown, escape their mothers, and hook onto a sailor to marry. I had 5 pregnant ones working for me at once, and when they are knocked up, they aren't even allowed to touch pine-sol and spray and wipe detergent,so who picked up the slack? So one in five of my troops were good for fetching coffee and doing my paperwork while I put my coveralls back on ,supervising as part of the work detail.This didn't bother me so much. However, when it was time to re-enlist, I lost my billet to a pregnant female who went after a discharge as soon as she gave birth.The ship lost the billet forever, which means that there would be no replacement for that position, and I went home to Ohio,12 years short of a career. I was a really good sailor who did my job well,was dedicated,and did my job correctly.I had planned on doing 20 years, then delivering mail, or something. The downsizing was a bloodbath of good guys losing careers they had counted on. The Navy had to even up the numbers in the process, and a lot of very good fellows got bumped for being white and male. A lot of meepers who couldn't handle the load got promoted and retained. A lot of good guys got fed up and got tossed out for having an opinion about it. There are a lot of places a man should not work either. A meeping warship is no place for females, I do not want to hear any political correctness over this. Maybe one in five could carry the load. Our officer females were retards too.All but one of the first 5 we had got a discharge or transfer in the first year aboard the ship.You want to know why? A warship is no place for females. Period. Sorry .
