Been saying this for years. Just wait for the full impact of the One-Child policy to kick in over the next couple decades -- imagine 1 adult worker for every 4 retirees. The actual number won't be close, but consider our governments are meepting their pants at the prospect of only 2 workers per retiree....

Either they're going to have to cull their elderly, or tax their economy into the ground, or some mix of the two. Either way, it's going to be a nightmare.

^ why wouldn't they just leave the elderly to drop dead unnoticed? You're speaking about the Chinese govt as if it's known for giving a meep about it's citizens basic human rights.

This is good news to me. I don't even want to imagine a time when the US can't do whatever it wants all the time.

wotak: That's what I'm talking about, culling the elderly. Unfortunately, that'll have the effect of contracting the population of China by a few hundred million inside a generation, and you can't just inflict that sort of demographic trauma on a society without serious meep happening.

I mean, the only comparable thing would be the Black Death in Europe, and that broke the patchwork feudalism that existed there. China has one authoritarian government that has to try to keep control during the sort of social upheaval that'll cause.

For one example: You shrink the population by that much, and there's going to be a lot more work to do than people to do it. This makes wages go sky-high, meaning China's big competitive advantage against other economies is going to evaporate. Which is no good for an economy that's almost entirely export-driven.

Considering there are 32 million more Chinese males than Chinese females in the generation that will take over for the culled elderly, I think they have their military generation pretty much ready to go.

The only problem they are going to have is a rampant infestation meep orgies full of angry men who have rarely, if ever, seen a woman, much less meeped one.

I'm willing to bet that, while while all other past sole superpowers were falling, their citizenry began speculating who would join them or take their place, then others, in denial, found some reasons to believe otherwise and ignored all other evidence.
