As meeped as the percentage who believe Noah took Jurassic Park on a 40 day cruise is, I suspect this story is hype, to promote a foreign film in the US.

I hate this place. http://www.unl.edu/rhames/courses/current/creation/evol-poll.htm

How informed would you say you are about the theory of evolution? Do you feel that you are very informed about the theory of evolution, somewhat informed, not too informed, or not informed at all?

Very informed: 34%

Somewhat informed: 47%

Not too informed: 11%

Not informed at all: 6%

No opinion: 2%

Just your opinion, do you think that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is -- [ROTATED: a scientific theory that has been well supported by evidence, (or) just one of many theories and one that has not been well supported by evidence], or don't you know enough about it to say?

Supported by evidence:35%

Not supported by evidence:39%

Don't know enough to say:25%

No opinion:1%

81% of us are at least somewhat informed about evolution, but only 35% understand that it's supported by evidence?

46% of Americans are this meep stupid and/or self-deluded?

I hate this place.

You hate this place? Try livin' in the Bible Belt. Despite all evidence to the contrary, meepers in AR will greedily defend their 'beliefs.' Ignorance is not bliss, down south it's a Badge of Courage.

What the meep happened to turn a country on the leading edge of educational and intellectual advances into an apparent backwards intellectual backwater and the laughingstock of the civilized world? How did ignorance become a virtue? We've always had a percentage of people who found faith easier to assimilate than knowledge, and we've always respected their right to bury their heads in the sand. Have we been ignoring and even protecting a cancer growing on America's brain that will leave us developmentally disabled.

America - Europe's retarded child.

I won't read this article because I think it would make me way to depressed.

Courageously displayed on the tailgate and back window of their pickup trucks for you to aggree with or meep off.

Sitting in bumper to bumper traffic a few mornings ago I let a pickup truck in line from a side lot. It belonged to an electrician as evidenced by the company name and number on the doors. Once he was in front of me I saw his message to the world stenciled along his tailgate. 'I am afraid of my government' followed by 'I get my rights from God, not politicians' and to cap it all off 'We do not warranty communist products - foreign or domestic'

I hate reading '39% of the country believe in BLAH' - where do these numbers come from? I've never been polled on pretty much anything in my life, yet I'm always included in the national statistics.

dent- it tells you were they get the number on the site. They polled a little over a thousand people, which gives a +/-3% error at 95% confidence, due to some statistics that I won't go into.

dag- I lived in Augusta meeping GA my entire life. I escaped to Chicago a month and a half ago and I'm never going back. I was waiting at a busy intersection behind a guy with a bumper sticker that said, 'honk if you love jesus.' I honked (I was religious at the time). He flipped me the bird. Even better, when I pulled out behind him, he started driving erratically so I couldn't get around him while going 30 under.

Wait wait wait.... did you just say that the portion of Americans who think that evolution is not supported by evidence are the intelligent ones? Is.. this.. sarcasm?

the original article stated that only 39% of americans believe in evolution. I think that's what the rat was quoting.

and I think 39% of americans being intelligent is a bit of a high estimate.

Oh. Yeah. Ok.

Yeah, 39% is a little high.

I'm thinking that the stupid 61% of the population should be ground up and fed to fish.

It's a lucky thing that some of that 61% who cannot or will not exercise their reasoning powers choose to side with the somewhat more intellectual instead of constructing their reality from fairy tales. In a democracy, 61% - 39% is a blowout and in other than a democracy it tends more towards genocide. So, like your momma told you, 'don't pick on the handicapped' they may be your friends and if not they can still swing a club.

also, tangentially, numbers like this sometimes make me wonder about the possibility of an ignorant teabagger, birther, gotta-get-my-guns-and-ammo-before-obantichrist-outlaws-them, OLIGARHY, no-obama-indoctrination-videos-for-my-kids-by-god, YOU LIE! peoples trying a khmer rouge-style anti-intellectual hail mary purge.

To be fair and not stuck in the 'only in my time' paradigm, America has been filled with dumb meeps since its inception. I would say that per citizen, America is slightly more enlightened than in previous decades, but the same dumb meeps (centered in the South) have a more visible platform to display their dumbmeepery wares. It is also another indicator that our jive is much stronger than reality... we think we are the most educated and evolved society, but really were pretty uneducated, unread, unwise, and ignorant to anything not USofA.

So, meep Us.
