fact check?
'Just before its August recess both the House of Representatives and the Senate passed legislation that would substantially expand SCHIP. The Senate bill would allow states to broaden SCHIP coverage to families making up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level and the House bill sets no income eligibility limits on the program. And some states are eager to use SCHIP to subsidize middle class health insurance for kids. For example, New Jersey wants to expand SCHIP coverage to 350 percent of the poverty level and New York wants to go up to 400 percent. So in the Garden State a family of four earning over $70,000 would be eligible for government health insurance for their kids and a family earning over $80,000 per year would qualify in the Empire State. Considering that the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the median income for a four-person family is below $80,000 in all but five states. This implies that at 400 percent of the poverty level, more than half of all American families could qualify for expanded SCHIP.'

Speaking in Pennsylvania, Bush said he vetoed the bill because it was a step toward 'federalizing' medicine and inappropriately expanded the program beyond its focus on helping poor children.
'I believe in private medicine, not the federal government running the health care system. I do want Republicans and Democrats to come together to support a bill that focuses on the poorer children,' the president said, adding the government's policy should be to help people find private insurance.

Let's just keep the current totalitarians, and not pretend these other totalitarians are somehow benevolent because they leverage the highly deserved suffering of lazy retards, and their suspect progeny, into emo-rationalizations for enslaving their fellow human beings.

at 17,500 dollars per troop wearing fire-proof gloves, thermal scopes and spending 100 times that spent in WWII (the war we won), we certainly have weird priorities about where to enforce fiscal discipline. Judging how we spend money with pentagon spending, we should just be leave money bundles of money on street corners of poor neighborhoods that say 'please regulate spending, thx-govt'.

OK, who here is considered lower - middle class? Are you insured?
Its funny that the right-wingers here are touting about 'Middle class' like its something that denotes rich and well off. Perhaps you should do your math and understand what wages and costs the middle class endure before running to Prez Retard's side. One of those major, life crushing, choice limiting, bankruptcy inducing costs is health care, where the middle class are just one major expense from surviving to being out on the street. So those-right-wingers-with-Bush's-meep-in-yer-mouth and Cheney's-manhood-buried-in-yer-crack, perhaps you should stop throwing around useless, tired terms, like middle-class and focus more on factual evidence like numbers.
God, I can't wait until you get pulled from your cookie-cutter mansions, and beaten to a pulp by an angry crowd of low and middle class citizens in front of your frigid wife and home children

Look. I try to steer clear of political discussions but I've got 2 cents to spare so what the meep. Wanna have kids? Put the dik down, go to college, get a fukin edumakashun, get married to another non loser with a college degree, get a job with health benefits, buy a fukin house in a no crack meep bangin on your front door kind of neighborhood, do some simple math and build yourself a household budget, and then you are cleared to have kids. Keep in mind that you should only have as many as you can afford and after that waste your meep into a condom or on your wife's meep or the fukin shower in the morning.
Problem is that we spend too much time rewarding dumbasses who can't follow these simple rules. Lazy meepes who fuk first and wonder about where the foodstamps are later. Whine all you want to about the poor little booger eaters coming down with some sort of respiratory ailment or whatever, but the fact is that they are paying for their parent's stupidity. Furthermore we are sort of skewing the whole evolution thing by supporting the dumbfuks of the world and their ability to procreate. Problem is that the smart people I know have few kids. It is the dumb ones that procreate unchecked. Before long we will be overrun by assholes who can't pay their own fukin bills but still churn out the kids like they are living on some sort of fukin puppy farm...
I need a beer.

Seeing as how these meepholes get to vote more than once on a single bill I don't care for politics to much. AND when they propose a bill written up as 'Free health insurance for all American children until they are 18' and attach to it another tag for 'raises for congress' I tend to not bother to care anymore. I say we all flush our toiletes at the same time saturday to see what happens

I haven't done much commenting recently but this thread is a humdinger- Linkswarm at its best- earthy insults mixed with well reasoned discourse... I watched 'Sicko' recently and it made me glad I live in a country (AUS) that has free (ish!) healthcare... Bicycle accident last year- a week in hospital, surgery and 4 screws in my arm -cost=NIL. Both sides of this argument have a point, but it all goes down the toilet when i read what the Iraq war is costing- sounds like everyone in the US could have a lifetime of free healthcare for that sort of money...

'Who here is lower-middle class'
That my friend is a tough question, and the answer depends entirely upon who you ask.
You see, most of us would probably consider ourselves to be middle-class, economywise.
However, and this is according to most democrat lawmakers in Washington, a combined family income of > $75000 a year launches you into WEALTHY status. meepin-A!!! I have finally made it to the American Dream!
Funny how being wealthy feels exactly like being middle-class.
Here is Massachusetts, the health insurance rules were changed requiring small businesses to provide their employees health insurance. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth about it but we got over it and adjusted. And guess what? A ton more people in the commonwealth suddenly had health insurance.
Along with this, we also have MassHealth which requires every citizen of the commonwealth to have health insurance. For those sad sacks in the lower class who cannot afford regular health insurance, govt. subsidized insurance is provided to them at a reduced cost (this went into effect this past July). All in all, the health insurance issue is Mass. isn't perfect but it isn't awful either. At least something is being done.
Perhaps that is where the health insurance issue should be tackled, at the state level. Tell the feds to keep their sausage fingers out of it.
It's funny how the Dems cater to those that historically are least likely to vote. That really doesn't make any sense.
So in closing: Bush was right to veto this. Clavis: I agree, and will begin shining my jackboots, post haste. The_Rat: Welcome back! I hope you trip into a bucket of AIDS. Regulator: I see you tossed some punctuation in there, but alot of it was wrong. Hey, I understand. Baby steps.

Just for your reference, what's usually talked about as the 'middle class' is actually sort of the top 30-40% of the bracket. Median household income was about 45K in 2005-so if you want to talk about the 'lower class' I would take households in the bottom 3rd-so making somewhere between 0-35K a year. So yes, I am in the lower class, thank you, but I am not a household either.

Spot on! meep them poor uninsured meeps! It's not like they'll affect me, I pay $400 a month to insure my family.
And when i have a medical emergency, I'll just be airlifted to the nearest ER, which will probably be in another state because all the uninsured medical assistance to the poor in California has only closed 70 emergency rooms since 1990 here.
But hey, helicopters are fast right? A flight to Oregon is only 2 hours away. Medical emergency mortality rates are really low in the first 2 hours after an incident, right?

'Both sides of this argument have a point, but it all goes down the toilet when i read what the Iraq war is costing- sounds like everyone in the US could have a lifetime of free healthcare for that sort of money...'
Ha... If we actually had the money to afford this war, that would be an interesting argument, but since we don't...
Seriously though, if the US Government was a person, it'd be filing bankruptcy right now.
