ratDVD is a freeware DVD shrinker/unshrinker.It will take a 4+ gig dvd down to about 900 megs.Then when the person on the other end is done downloading,all they have to do is burn it to a DVD and it will be back to the original.

I only used it once and it seemed to work pretty good.

This is interesting, and I am excited (unless the quality sucks).

i'd be truly amazed if the quality wasn't meep. ratdvd is reducing to roughly a quarter of its original size. you're talking 1GB vs 50 MB. as an example of ratio (and i know it's not comparable), you'd be compressing a 32 MB wav into 400k mp3.

the applications of this seem extremely limited:

i believe that in a 90 minute movie, an actor's face will seldom be shown from the same angle, in the same lighting conditions, in the same pose. that pretty much goes for everything. i mean, static shots of people talking at the table eating breakfast, it might help a bit. i honestly doubt it's worth it; we already have the technology.

ratdvd sucks, because of the compression (obviously) you lose quality that you cannot get back. I used it a couple times, and made this face every time: :(

Considering the article was published over a year ago, and we're still not downloading .euclid files or whatever they'd be called, i think it's pretty safe to say it was a failure.
