This has been buzzing around the office quite a bit today, one question that is thought provoking is why schools are the backdrop for this type of violence and why do we not see this happen more in the modern stress filled workplace.

Good point. Perhaps the 'gunman' actually went from room to room whispering 'you nappy-headed meep' to each of his victims, who then obligingly fell down dead. After all, it ruined the dignity and fortitude of trillions of otherwise-hardy American citizens.

Pretty scary. UNC is pretty similiar demographically. I know 7 or 8 people that go there. I'm hoping they are not dead.

There was a listing of the last 10 years of school shootings on a website I was reading this afternoon. Nearly all of those shootings were at high schools. The school shootings, by nature, get more coverage for a longer duration. I would be curious to see the ratio of school shootings to workplace shootings on a per capita type (population in the situation) basis. One wonders that if school shootings are more common on that basis, could that be attributed to the kind of intense emotional pressure cooker that adolescence is/has become for some kids.

In Switzerland, the government issues to every man an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they are required to keep at home. The surplus guns (after upgrades and such) are sold to the general public.

Gun crime in Switzerland is so rare they can't assemble statistics about it.

Their schools and public buildings don't have gun control limitations. Politicians aren't surrounded by police escorts.

Sure, this is anectdotal evidence, but it seems to me violent crime is the product of societal factors that seem to be absent in places like Canada and Switzerland where guns are everywhere but people aren't shooting each other in the head very often.

Students at the university's online newspaper, planetblacksburg.com, today discovered a message on a website that seemed to announce the massacre.

Posted early yesterday morning on 4chan, a website that allows anonymous postings, the message warned: 'hey /b/ I'm going to kill people at vtech today in the name of anonymous.'
