Yeah. I never watched presidential roasts specifically to check discomfort indexes, but I bet this is the most discomforting roast in modern history for the embedded and/or sympathetic.

Roasting W was only half of it. This was the WH correspondent's dinner.
'But the rest of you, what are you thinking, reporting on NSA wiretapping or secret prisons in eastern Europe? Those things are secret for a very important reason: they're super depressing. And if that's your goal, well, misery accomplished. Over the last five years, you people were so good over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn't want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew. But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works: the president makes decisions. He's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Put them through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know...fiction.'
I don't think he gave a meep that he wasn't getting big laughs.

how the media is ignoring the whole thing.
Beyond the fact that it happens to every president, and thusly doesn't seem all that newsworthy, I've read at least 2 news articles (ok, online...but by legit news organizations) that were actually very fair and evenhanded about it.

I've been a fan of Colbert from the beginning. But, it took a while to get used to the 'character' he portrays. He's quickly become phenomenal at what he does. He's a Shoalin master of satire.

Mr. Colbert, what an American! For so long I have heard that rhetoric, 'land of the free, home of the brave.' Yet, looking out at my countrymen, whom have allowed this tyrant to rise to power; much in the way Hitler rose to power. Cobert, spoke freely and truthfully, now if only the country could stop the blogging and start the marching. The american people hold the keys to freeing us from this tyrant, but are to lazy to turn off the TV, avoid work and bring the economy to a hault until the corporations and politicians listen. Best said by Natalie Portman in Episode 2, 'So this is how DEMOCRACY dies, through thunderous Applause.' Well, I appauled you Mr. Colbert and for bring the First Lady out into the public light again as well. Seems, even the Press neglect their own; which is sad. From someone with ethics and aspiring to be a photojournalist; I am fed up with the Press in this country unwilling to cover truth and fact, because it might be unpopular with the minority. Colbert, Thanks for having the meep to do it to his face and their face.

I suggest you all watch Bush's bit (it came right before Colbert's during the dinner). Bush and his lookalike made fun of many of the same things that Colbert did and it came off better than Colbert's speech in my opinion. I think you'll find that part of the reason Colbert didn't get a great reaction was that alot of the issues were already touched by Bush mere minutes beforehand and it was honestly funnier. I found there to be alot of overlap and it was nice in a way to hear it from Bush himself.
I'm interested in what your thoughts are on the two speeches. I almost wonder if the Bush team already had a copy of Colbert's speech when they wrote Bush's, because it stole alot of thunder from Colbert's.
Let me know what you think if you've watched both. If you haven't, I highly suggest it.
