No new results here, surprising this made it to Nature.
Noone is saying that H5N1 in its present form is going to cause a pandemic - it'll have to go through several mutations before it can happily hop between people.
But FYI, the 1918 flu pandemic also stated out as a strain of bird flu - what made it so deadly was the fact that it kept it's preference for the deep lung tissue and aquired the ability to jump into humans relatively quickly, rather than by a slow genetic drift that would have given the population to aquire a level of herd immunity.
