People who have less than the intelligence of the average 13 year old do not comprehend death. They don't understand that people die and never come back.

maybe if the citizens were allowed to be armed for their protection this wouldn't happen...If 8 hooded youths approached me? I got 7 rounds in the clip meep! Or at least I have somethign to make them think if it's really worth meeping with me...saved my life once. I'm far from looking for trouble, but I am thankful for the fact that I can defend myself if it becomes absolutely nesesary. Of course in merry old england they are trying to outlaw large kitchen knives....

Nocal, maybe I'm a unique meeperfly, but I certainly have comprehended the concept of death for QUITE SOME TIME. Certainly as far back as I can remember and definitely before the age of 13.

anywhoo, I'm not contesting that 13 year olds are dumb (perhaps too dumb to be given the chair), however, I REALLY REALLY have never met any 13 year old who didn't know what death was, and didn't understand that it is irreversible.
13 is only a half-year removed from High School for most people. An Average HS aged child s doesn't know what death is? You've never been to the Bronx, have you?

Dude, you are so overestimating the average high schooler. From what I remember, most of them are borderline retarded. And there are other unbelievable principles, like children under 6 don't understand conservation (the same amount of something in a different shape is still the same amount). I've tried that one, it's true.

'children under 6 don't understand conservation (the same amount of something in a different shape is still the same amount). '
That one still fools me. In fact, that's something you learn by seeing the tall glass poured into the shorter, wider one.
How about a linky to this 13 year old thing...

Nocal: A little off-topic. Please respond in forums if you have much input.
It seems to me that most of the 'stages of childhood' psychology has been compiled since the initiation of childhood as we know it a couple centuries ago (I think the Victorian Era is usually pegged as the beginning in the west). Would you care to comment on the validity of these theories of development for children brought up in traumatic cirmeepstance which require 'growing up quickly.' For example, child soldiers, meepually abused youngsters, etc. I would think that children who grew up in an environment that is less insulating than the average child would advance through these stages more quickly (and differently, i.e. in a way that we would likely see as dysfunctional).
