i think nintendo's smarter than you guys give them credit for. if you bothered to listen/read the keynote speech they gave at the TGS, you'll know they are trying to target non-gamer audiences and grow the market.
for example, my girlfriend saw the video of the new controller, and is very excited about it. she's not exactly a non-gamer, but she's not exactly a hardcore gamer either. (she enjoys a few games here and there; soul caliber, morrowind, super smash bros, etc) and if you've been reading the press releases, you'd know they're offering a gamecube-style controller that this remote controller can plug into, so all those games that don't utilize the controller will be playable.

i think the one thing that i think is being overlooked here is the fact that this could have just as easily been an 'add-on' for the console. nintendo, knowing that add-on's don't sell and therefore don't get any market penetration, decided that if they wanted developers (and customers) to make use of this, it had to be built in and standard with the system. now, who knows if third partys will go for it, but nintendo i'm sure will release plenty of games utilizing this. (example: donky konga drums(bongos?) now have 3 games for them; the touch screen on the DS)
also, look at the promotional video. many of them show two or more people playing together. nintendo wants this. this controller just screams party games all over. for an outside observer, or non-gamer, it just looks like it would be fun to interact with. which brings them in. which grows the market. something nintendo mentions repeatedly in the keynote speech. this is what nintendo wants.

now, i'm no raving nintendo fanboy, although 2 out of the 3 consoles i've ever owned are nintendo's. but it seems the technology is sound, capable, and with lots of potential. but with all that said, it still takes great games to make a great console. and THAT - well, that we won't know until at least a year after the console is released.
at the very least, this is an interesting time in gaming.

what i don't understand is how they think they can expand the market. i highly doubt a lot of people want to play games but are scared by 'complex controllers'. if you want to game, you already own. i just don't see the market for this.

Actually, LOki has so far avoided my XBox copy of the third in his beloved Thief series because of the controller.
