Now how do you define philosopher? Chuck D has a philosophical bent, and he's no crapmeep, but I can't say he's contributed to the field of human knowledge in any real way. As for the poets, meh. Marley did a lot of brilliant work but more as an entertainer and celebrity diplomat than a leading light in thought.

In the 'Chuck D and Friends' category -- entertainers and celebrities who had a scatter-shot effect -- I'd have to add Heinlein and Twain and HL Mencken.

Hungrig has a point above. Lest anyone think I'm busting on blacks in observing that they don't seem to produce many worthwhile thinkers, I'll note that white supremacists produce even fewer contenders. I can name none.
