Despite the fact that he deserves no pats on the back for following through, I'm glad that this law was struck down. I don't freak out about immigration like some people, but as a native Californian, I think it's meeping dumb to offer legal driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. We shouldn't reward illegal immigration like that, and who knows what would happen if terroists could cross our borders and obtain legal IDs.

I live in California, I meeping see immigrants on the street, and my heart goes out to them because they have hard lives at home, and hard lives in America. But giving them driver's licenses is just meeping stupid. Like you said, they drive anyway, it's not like if they got them they all say collectively, 'Thank you Guvna! We can drive now!' You are correct. Mexicans and Central Americans are not the only illegal immigrants in this country. Fact is though they make up a large part of them.

Last time I checked, to get a license in the first place, you have to show some kind of domeepentation that you have liability insurance. I would suggest that most people who go to the trouble of complying with the law, especially those who risk deportation, would be inclined to comply. I can't see how enabling these people to get to and from a job is harmful.

As to the argument that it is a security issue (re getting on a plane without ) ID, ask any college student (including the Bush girls) about finding quality fake id's. The security thing is a red herring. The real issue is that there is this fear that if we extend to them the ability to drive, God knows what they'll want next.

I would suggest that the real reason we don't take serious measures to 'clean them out' is because there is a greater economic incentive to let them stay, in the economic benefit (usually ignored) in lower food costs, service costs, etc?

I'm a college student. There is no such thing as a quality fake, at least, not to board an aircraft in America. Maybe to get into a shady bar. And yes you're right, we would never 'clean them out.' Do you want to pick fruits and vegetables and bullmeep like that? No one does, and immigrants have to suffer working in those types of jobs. The reason I don't want to extend too many rights to immigrants is that they are constantly abused. Say I hire an illegal to do some meepty construction thing. I decide not to pay him. What's he going to do? No domeepentation, no proof, can't even speak english to tell the cops. Well that's bullmeep, and they need help. I think it should be easier to immigrate legally in such a way that we can encourage good people to come over here and weed out the bullmeep ones that (sometimes) commit crimes and rip off our system. Believe me I'm pretty liberal, I just don't like the idea that we should encourage illegal immigration and all the baggage that comes with it.

I simply disagree that to enable them to obtain driver's licenses will ENCOURAGE them to immigrate illegally. They are doing it anyway, my friend. Allowing them to obtain drivers' licences, in my opinion, may ENCOURAGE them to get insurance.

I fly almost weekly for my job. If you really think that our first line of defense is the fine men and women of the TSA, you ought to go observe them for a while. Its laughable.

I mean, why not drive a ryder truck ala timothy mcveigh into a shopping mall on christmas eve?

There are a MILLION ways for a person to strike terror in our country. Allowing illegal immigrants to get a driver's license so they can pick tomatoes isn't going to have ONE IOTA of an effect on the range of possibilities of one inclined to inflict harm on the american public... For all of it's faults this is still a great country and a great place to live. People from all over the world are willing to endure hardships that most of us can't even imagine and sell themselves into slavery so that their kids can grow up to be Americans.

Sometimes, with all the political bull meep it's easy to forget that America isn't the government. It's the people, all of us. We're America. Not political assholes and bureaucrats who have never had a real job or produced anything except paperwork.

We aren't perfect but we are mostly good people with mostly good intentions. We spend more time, effort and money helping undeveloped countries than any other country in the world.

Any way, the point I'm trying to make is that it's meep nice to live in a country that people want to escape to rather than escape from. And virtually all of us here are either imagrents or the decendants of imagrents.

Someone with a clean record doesn't have a risk in getting a driver's license. There would be background checks, they say...but just for a criminal record in America? Abroad too? Every country in the world? We are still talking about the DMV here right? So someone with no record who is able to lie about his religious background can enter the US illegally, get a valid form of ID...I believe you need valid ID to get a Ryder truck, by the way...and then use that ID to do whatever s/he wants with it. (One reason it was struck down: the illegal IDs wouldn't distinguish them as immigrants, therefore giving them the appearance of citizenship) And when I say that the airlines are vigilant in their screening of passengers...well I fly pretty frequently, and yeah they're morons. BUT I'm saying, try to buy a plane ticket without ID. Try to buy it without a credit card. Walk up to the counter with no ID and pay CASH. Won't happen. It just isn't feasible to say that now they're driving legally. Let's say they get in an accident and their illegal status is discovered. Do they get deported? So...ID won't help that.

WHAT I SAID was that you don't need a licence to smoke in bathrooms. You just need the will to do it. A small thing like a driver's license isn't going to do meep squat tpo prevent terrorists from smoking in airplane bathrooms.

I still don't understand how preventing Illegal Aliens from driving will contribute to a less-secure America. YOU may have a hard time finding quality fake licenses, but if you think for a minute that a well equipped and well connected Saudi can't get a fakie, or a fake passport for that matter, you're living in a dreamland.

This law would have given IDs to immigrants, and said IDs would not have distinguished said immigrants from citizens. Not giving illegals identification WOULD stop them from boarding airplanes...like I said, just try to buy a plane ticket without ID and/or a credit card. You'll raise so many red flags. It's not about driving, per se (although you did bring up a good point with renting a truck to drive into a building...illegals can't rent a truck without valid ID), it's about giving them the APPEARANCE of legal citizenship. I know meep well that a well-connected Saudi might be able to get a good fake. But if you've ever seen CAs licenses...they're very good and very hard to fake. I could also argue that it's easy to counterfeit money, so we should give it away. I don't want to make it easy on anyone.

We need the labor force. The pyramids weren't built by the locals. It is a huge strain on the infrastructure, but it would be worse to try to integrated their wages into the mianstream economy. Look at how inefficient the tax system is for those of us who are citizens. Now try to imagine what it would cost to bring the immigrants into the flow. Our cost of living would skyrocket. Anytime you raise the standards for the lowest economic class, you raise the cost for all levels above it. And that means you and me. Well, me, anyway.
