I spoke with my g/f's brother, who volunteered in Somalia, and he actually told me to contact unicef.

I don't see why you need to be so hostile, but you go right ahead and continue your tirade. Your apology isn't important enough to worry about, but if your decision to donate is based on my actions and not genuine charity, then you should just light the loonies on fire and cram them up your meep.

One group I've heard of that I'm interested in is Global Crossroads, for example, but I can't afford to pay the fees for them. I hope to take up a local sponsorship if I can.

Dude the only reason I spoke up was that right out of the gate your meepstory didn't hold up, here: "...and of course just general peace-keeping type of things" This is a peace keeper: " The only way to be one, is to be a member of the military, I do not know of a single volunteer based charity that provides peace keeping purposes.

Compare "I have contacted UNICEF and volunteered for "active-duty" in Sri Lanka.", with the statement, "I emailed them, I asked for information on how to volunteer with other groups". Now the second one sounds plausible, but the first one reeks of troll.

Something else, I wasn't the only one who thought your meep was bullmeep, fuk mundhra out-and-out called you a meep but your response was directed at me. I think it's partly cause I asked you to put your money where your mouth is, by offering an conditional apology I was admitting that I could be wrong, and would face consequenses. By offering a monetary contribution to charity, I wanted to show that I was sincere and being wrong would cost me (kinda like a sin tax). this puzzles me why you would deprive some poor Sri Lankans of $100 by having it tucked away in my meep.

Well sorry for going off on you guys. Can we be amicable again, or are you just going to hate me and post hairy black women on my journal some more?

Anyway, UNICEF mailed me back, suggesting UNV as a possible direction. I had already discovered them, and I mailed them asking for more information. I already talked to Global Crossroads, and they can't waive the fees anymore. I can't really afford to go that route, but now I'm mailing UNV and seeing if they have any avenues I can explore. A few of my friends have donated for me to go Global Crossroads (though I never asked), but until I really know how it's going to work out I'm thinking of sending that cash to the Red Cross.

If you found my original post on this misleading, it is because I had already made the decision in my mind. Comparing myself to a "UN peacekeeper" isn't what I was trying to do. By "peace keeping" I imagine those sorts of duties would entail trying to keep looters/gangs from corrupting the rest of the population, etc. As far as I know, any wars these people were engaging in have been put on temporary hiatus due to the tsunami. Apparently in Thailand a lot of gangs are snatching up orphaned teens and selling them into slavery/prostitution. Nice people.

Dumbskull: The cool ones are the ones who aren't immediately doubting and skeptical, the ones who are possibly even supportive. Y'know, the sort of people one would like to have around when they decide to go through with something like this.

Take all this however you want to, but I'm actually trying to do this.

Your heart is in the right place, and just by example you can show people in that part of the world that not all Americans are uncaring, unfeeling, soulless, money-grubbing war-mongering Bush-hugging assholes. It's gonna be gnarly over there, and you will see and experience things that you'll never be able to completely get out of your head. Just fight the good fight, be strong, and stay safe. Above all, keep your sense of humor. Didn't you hear them say "DON'T EAT THE BROWN ACID!"? I wish you much luck over there. They need all the help they can get.

Well whatever. I can pay for Global Crossroads now, so I'm going to Sri Lanka. I'm looking at Colombo as a starting point. I know I will help with rebuilding, especially medical housing and temporary refugee housing. Thanks to Eugene, Oregon, and all the hippies that live there, because they are the reason I can pay. The U of O campus is full of people who want to support a cause, and I'm not going to complain there.

LK, if you had something in particular you wanted from Sri Lanka, I'll try to bring it. Otherwise I'm bringing my digital camera, so I'll have plenty of photos. I'm also going to India after I finish. I already know one travel agent in Bombay, so I'm sure I'll visit there, but I really want to check out the Taj Mahal before I come back.
