Almost 30 and feeling it..

Today I realized I'm almost 30. I also realized I'm overweight, out of shape and picked up some really nasty habits in the past 10 years. I moved out when I was 18 and haven't really changed since. Smoking, eating bad, watching TV, playing MMO's and multi-player FPS's..

Today I got myself a treadmill, a workout mat and some free weights. I have a free room I'm going to turn into a gym in the hopes of at least shedding off a few pounds of fat and gaining a few pounds of muscle.

I also plan on getting rid of all the nasty things I eat and stocking up on fruits, veggies and raw meats. I'm a very lazy cook, and most of the stuff I eat can easily be tossed in the oven or microwave. I rarely actually cook anything.

Knowing myself, I probably won't change my eating habits. I'll probably hit the gym once for 15 minutes and never go in that room again. This is kinda why I'm creating this journal. I'll update it with how much I worked out, routines, what I ate, recipes and other meep I discover along my journey.. or I'll fail miserably and this will be the last journal entry..

April 15th 2011

Bought some vitamins this morning, centrum cardio (good for cholesterol).. Dead tired though so no workout today. Had some fruit for breakfast (2 banana's and an apple) and up to my 2nd litre of water. I hear drinking lot's of water is an important part in flushing out toxins. Sadly, my camera is ded but I'll start posting pics of the home/gym and food once I get a new cam.. checking prices at best buy..

April 16th 2011

2x 30 min job.
200 push-ups through out the day.
Looking at quick 10min full body workout's I can do in the morn before jogging every other day.

No breakfast.. this has to change
Turkey sandwich on white bread for lunch.
Frozen fish (haddock) with rice and veggies for supper.. sad thing, everything was frozen/processed except the rice, it was instant. But that's going to change shortly, found 3 butchers around me (2 halal), there's Hatian fruit/vegetable store 2 mins away and a farmer's market (this one) one subway stop away. I'm going to start visiting these places more often.

I'm looking for some quick/healthy recipes so I can compile a list of ingredients before I go grocery shopping.

I'm also going to try and quit smoking but I will keep playing Black Ops. I realize that working out will relive stress, but I need a definite outlet. I'm looking at taking a class or something I can do outside in the mean time. I could go to the shooting range but it's expensive, far and kinda complicated here in Canada. I'm still too out of shape to take up an actual sport right now.. maybe after a few months of dieting and cardio, I might be able to enjoy some form of sport and dump the FPS's all together.

Not so much the exercise, but I'm making healthy meals.
It really makes a difference.

I played a lot of world of warcraft, but it's been months since I logged on.. lately a lot of black ops..

thing is I don't cook.. I can't cook meep besides scrambled eggs and frying a steak.. for example. tonight I ate take out general tao chicken with steamed rice.. I usually get take-out 5-6 times a week.. A lot of people tell me just changing my diet does wonders..

I'm trying to combine both exercise and healthy eating.. I'll try to put up some pics of the home/gym, need some help to get the treadmill in that room.. I'm thinking of mounting a nice 21" in front of it.. I also got a nice closet with mirrored doors.. I'll try to make some videos/pics of the stuff I cook/eat..

You can cook anything you wanna '(cept maybe things like cheese souffle. That meep takes more talent than I have.)

What makes it even easier is YOU HAVE THE INNERNATZ!
Apparently you're not illiterate, and cooking directions are frequently in point form. The web has thousands of cookbooks for kitchen simpletons.
Next up! Learn to like cooking.

Whipping up a meal for one or two is easy, and quick, once you know how.

changing your diet DOES do wonders. lean meats and veggies and you will feel much better. take out makes me feel physically bad, no matter what.
i play WoW too. sometimes diablo II online.
is it laziness, or can you just not cook? following and executing a recipe isn't rocket science.

it's mostly laziness.. I have very unstable work hours.. in fact it's 3:24 am and I'm on a conference troubleshooting some url encoding that gets mangled before hitting back-end applications and I have a presentation and training to give tomorrow at 1pm, in 9 hours to be exact.. I won't be cooking meep in between.. it's usually get up, shower, meep shaving and probably pick up a guru and a muffin on the way to work.

I can't cook...

This is such a bullmeep statement. There is no skill required to cook healthy meals. Reading a recipe and following simple instructions in front of a counter and a stove are skills that most 5 year olds have mastered. This is nothing but a lazy cop out.

You can prepare a salad, steam some broccoli and grill a sirloin in about 15 minutes. If you clean up while you work the whole meal will have a grand total of 20 minutes invested in it. Having been around FPS addicts, I can assume that you have absolutely no problem meeping off in front of that game for hours on end - so this excuse that you can't do it is literal bullmeep.

Now, if you wish to live on take-out and microwaveable corn byproducts (which is exactly what 90% of microwavable food is), you will never be healthy. Even if you do spend an hour a day in your new gym, you'll still be eating garbage and that garbage will make you look and feel like meep. Sitting static for hours on end at work, during your commute to and from work, and as a hobby after work is a great way to ensure that your sick body will store every meepty meal you eat as fat. Your organs are being effected by this lifestyle as well and, eventually, so will your mind - long before it should.

My wife and I just attended the funeral of a dear friend who killed himself in almost exactly the same manner. At the ripe old age of 47 he dropped dead of complications related to the type II diabetes that he inflicted upon himself due to his lazy lifestyle and meepty eating habits. He left a 16 year old boy and a 14 year old girl to fend for themselves in the process. The meeptiest part is, they're both on the same path to self destruction that he took to an early grave.

You are not entitled to a healthy body. You have to use common sense and a bit of self self control sprinkled with a dash of self respect to maintain your life vessel. If you cannot manage these simple self maintenance duties, your quality of life will continue to decline and you will have nobody to blame but the pasty blob in the mirror.

So, can the meeping excuses and take at least minimal amount of interest in yourself and your health. Otherwise, meep off and die with the rest of the lazy retarded slobs in this country.

Honest to really, cooking is easy.
First and foremost: Don't be lazy about it.
Second: Don't be scared of cooking. "I can't do that" is bullmeep, especially
with the cornucopia of cookbooks on the internet.
If you can follow directions, you can cook.

Doing dishes IS a pain in the meep for most people, but you don't have to empty dish and cookware cupboards to cook even a days worth of meals.
Get your self a portable dishwasher, if they're that daunting.

Personally, I like washing dishes. It's a nice solitary no brainer activity
that results in something accomplished when it's done, even if it's a minor something.

I'm with dragonstaff on this one, but in the spirit of my recent resolution to look more kindly on my fellow apes, here are a few tips:

No job / money is worth croaking of heart disease at 40. You will be surprised just how much you can push back on the management if you say "i'm going to be offline for a few hours, gotta go work out / train" instead of "i've gotta go play WoW and smoke bongs".

Loose the video game addiction. Video games are stupid and teach you to loose. Most chicks think it's boring and gross, and they're right.

Take up an outdoor activity, any outdoor activity (what did you enjoy as a child?). Most chicks this they're fun and cool, and they're right.

Don't think you're gonna work out by yourself in your house. Sign up for classes. Pay for 6 months in advance, so you have an economic incentive to keep showing up.

Get a meeping martial art you fat meep. Pay for 6 months in advance, so you have an economic incentive to keep showing up.

Find people to cook with and for. Invite people. Get invited. Make plans. Enjoy company. Be polite, enjoyable company.

And finally, learn to enjoy doing dishes. It is a zen activity worthy of respect.

Take charge of your meeping life you worthless piece of meep.

Ive always hated the idea of burning an hour in a gym. Last summer i bought a bike (Marin 29er) for the 10mi each way commute to work. Then I got rid of the second car.

Best thing i ever did. I still need to eat better (i have a vicious sweet tooth that undermines the healthy food my wife cooks), but i pretty much put myself in the position of having to exercise 2x a day for a half hour.

good luck.

why not buy a shake-weight, gets you fit and you could give the best handjobs ever

Best advice I ever heard was that the secret to long life was "2 Cheeseburgers a day, and all the green beans you can eat".

I don't follow it though, I live like Meatloaf.

Smoke and lick only the good crack.

I cook almost daily. I prepare healthy meals, big on vegetables and whole grains, short on lean proteins. All this meep booze I drink keeps me fat and lazy.

At thirty, I was doing an unbelievable amount of food, beer, and even the occasional line. At nearly twice that, I have coffee with a single shot for breakfast, two bong hits, and a light lunch, then a chunk of meat with some kind of veggie for dinner. I went from a stone's throw from 300lbs to a steady 165-to175 (I'm six foot even). I work my meep off every day I can. We cook all our own meep. It's fun. Learn it...way better than anything in the restaurants. I'm in better shape now than I was at your age, and I smoke more pot, eat better food, and do more things. I just wish I hadn't blown out my joints so I'm so sore every morning....lose that weight now.

Wotak has some of the best wisdom I've seen as of late to share. If you are serious about changing your life, no amount of gym rooms will fix it. Slap the excuses out of your mouth and take some real personal responsibility. Meep motivation, it is called god meep reality. I woke up once with the same realization you shared, it can be done, if it doesn't it lies squarely on your shoulders.

That being said, make it ritualistic if you want to maintain it at first. Do the same activities at the same time daily. Also, keep it simple, no reason to spend more time shopping for the gym room than your meep is going to be in it.

Wotak has some of the best wisdom I've seen as of late to share.

I appreciate all the advice and I do agree, it's all on me. I've been living like this for over 10 years. Starting new meep isn't as easy as it sounds. It takes a meep-load of motivation to break a 10 year routine instant gratification and over indulgence. It's not like I don't enjoy the way I'm living/used to live. I love it! I just don't like what I'm becoming and that's what make it difficult.. but I'm sure a few more gems like "Take charge of your meeping life you worthless piece of meep." will help motivate my meep..

Getting old is NOT for sissies.

just get it in your head that you want to be healthy. everything else will fall into place if you can do that. think about what you're doing, make conscious decisions and form better habits.
i gaurantee you'll start feeling better after removing meep food from your diet.
as far as this gym thing goes, i think it's a stupid thing and you're wasting your money. if you want to be active then go do something constructive. like yardwork. keep a garden with vegetables that you can eat. go outside and do something

Video game habit: Needs to go. Period. Delete your PC games and sell your consoles. Video games meep your mind into a fall sense of accomplishment. The few friends I have who still game are tossers. Nice people, good friends, but tossers. Don't be a meep. Even staring at a wall for hours on end is better than video games...at least doing that you would develop some mental stillness. Which by the way, is a good thing to develop, because a still mind is a strong mind is a focused mind. Video games meep that up.

Diet: Keep it simple and cooking won't be a chore. Brown rice is a good carb staple. There are good, cheap salad mixes at places like Trader Joes and Fresh & Easy (lettuce is useless, go for things like baby spinach, arugula, herbs and spring greens). Avoid dressing besides olive oil and vinegar. Make apples, bananas, mixed nuts, and dried fruit your snack foods. Go for lean meats. Drink lots of water and lots of green tea.

Exercise: Keep this simple too so it's easy to maintain. Start off with pushups (I recommend perfect pushups), crunches, and a 2 mile run. Do that routine every other day. Once you start feeling good branch out to other exercises. Yoga once a week would be a good investment. Working out stoned is awesome (but only smoke a little) - increases body awareness, focus, and dulls the muscle pain. When you work up to it, try running stoned in Vibram Five Fingers - you'll feel like a gazelle.

Smoking: Not sure what to tell you here. I smoked cigarettes for almost 10 years, and quit 6 months ago. IMO focus on the other aspects of your life and you will develop enough mental discipline and appreciation towards your body to walk away from smoking pretty painlessly.

Misc: Challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Take dance lessons and start reading The Brothers Karamazov. Take a couple weeks off and backpack through Central America. Doing stuff life this gives you the positive momentum that breaks bad habits.

That's my spiel.

Smacking meep's is a good work out 'n keeps the pimp hand strong.

and remember: back hand is for discipline... front hand for abuse.

tiny update..

my meep needs a bit more motivation.. I'm eating right and have been for a month now (couple of times I ordered a pizza).. haven't really experimented alot with cooking new meep, mostly stuff I already knew..

I'm not really working out.. I seem to be way too tired to even get my meep on the treadmill.. any advice on beating this tired thing.. I generally have 3-4 hours of sleep a night, 6-7 on weekends.. trying for 8 but I can't sleep during the day and have been working alot of nights since February, hence the 3-4 hours a night.

still smoking and can't quit.. I've somewhat accepted that fact making it even harder.. I'm thinking of volunteering in a hospital, cancer ward and maybe that'll wake my dumb meep up..

so yeah..not alot of progress..

Sounds like you still need to find something hobby-wise that'll motivate you to move yer meep.
You could check your paper's event section, wander around your local downtown area or mall and just look at what people are into.
I'm gonna be 40 next week and I'm thinking of taking up barbecueing for events.

So I started working out alot more.. I'm really out of shape.. picked up the p90x video a few days ago and gave it a try.. it's been 4 days.. gonna hit it tonight again.. anybody else try this meep? I can't finish a video, I'm exhausted half way trough but I'll keep at it an pace myself until I can do the whole thing.. I think it'll be a while before I do..

I've also been jogging/speed walking a kilometer every morning with a quick workout routine (pushups, squats, pushups and more squats) and eating right too. I've been hitting the farmers market a lot too. I'm still didn't get into the whole cooking thing yet.. but I have a few recipes lined up for next week.

Still play some BlackOps, I don't know why, but sniping head shots are a great stress outlet. Work is a lot more quiet, I'm starting a steady 9-5 schedule, no more random nights and weekends for a while, hopefully long enough for me to change my ways..

So it's been a month and a half and I'm finally getting my meep in gear. A big thanks to everybody for you're advice and encouragement. I'll try to keep you guy's posted and if I changed my mind and figure before after picks and journals aren't too meep, I'll post them up too.

It might seem like I'm not pacing myself, but I am. I'm not overdoing anything and I think the limits I set for myself aren't above the out of shape state I'm in. I din't mention, but I'm doing the lean program of p90x and it's mostly cardio, stretching/yoga and some heavy stuff (chest and arms video involves about 500 pushups), but it's once a week in my rotation. I'm doing the push ups and squats, 50 of each in the morning just to get my body used to working out and I'll up the load but most of it consists of cardio until I feel I'm ready to take it up a notch with some intense weight training.. I'm am into the whole protein thing as well, eating 8 times a day and taking up to 75%-80% of protein a day (1gram/ pound of weight) since I'm mostly doing cardio.

what you're doing seems pretty heavy if you're just starting out. work your way up. do as many reps as you can until it starts to hurt, then do 10 more. trust me, i've been there. you'll eventually get to the point where you can do this program easily and all the way through, given time. it's good you're doing the protein thing, your muscles need it to repair themselves.
