Project: Barbecue Trailer
__As you might have heard, I might have some ill-gotten gains coming thanks to some coworkers that feel like our lunch breaks weren't the best they could be.
Without going into detail; I kinda agree, but it was one of those iffy things that a moderately decent person would just put up with.(We make good money, after all)
So since I'm doing the "My name is Earl" bit, I'm spreading it around.
During the annual refresher training this week, I bought $180 worth of meat and experienced the joy of organizing a staff barbeque.
In a prison environment, that entails getting permission from an assistant warden, clearing it with the training instructors, itemizing all the foodstuffs, setting tasks and timelines, ensuring that no contraband-type items get misplaced/stolen, reserving a secure area away from the general population, greasing various palms to get gates and doors opened in a timely manner, bribing a trusted local(staff) warlord to get the meat started while I was in class, etc, etc.
Minus the bullets whizzing by, It's a lot like running foreign aid in Somalia.
While planning all this out, I was informed that we can't use the company grill anymore because of some trouble with the fact that it was built using funds from commissary. (Profits from inmate purchases)
So technically, it belongs to the inmates.
-Who aren't allowed to have anything not issued by commissary or the BOP.
Last I checked, neither one issued steak, tri-tip, bratwurst, pork ribs or charcoal in any shape or form.
So the campers have a barbeque, and nothing to put on it.
For whatever political reason, I can't buy the barbeque directly from IMAC, so...
This is the new STAFF BARBEQUE.
Good old Harbor Freight; Always good for raw materials!

So here we've got the frame, tow hitch, suspension and wheels all ready for rapin'.

Oh dear, Let's not do anything rash that might void our warranty!

The way I see it, I'm gonna want to be able to do a big pig anyway.

And;
I finished the grate. The un-seasoned steel is making the pattern seem off, but I matched the edges to make it look like one piece.
I made these little fold-down tabs to cover the holes left by the missing upper grate (Just for when I barbecue a pig)

It will probably tow a lot better with standard sized wheels, too.
Were you smart enough to by spindles and hubs that will let you run the same wheels as on your truck? That way, you always have a spare for the trailer when you have it out (unless you get a flat on the truck at the same time).

Yes sir, I was!
The new spindles fit my spare perfectly.
Toyota wheels cost more though, and the tires looked too large for the trailer.
So I went the cheap route and just picked up some old rims from the scrapyard, stripped three layers of paint off 'em, hit them with a few coats of metal finish and mounted some $40 used tires.
Side Note:1
The mornings are nice and cool now.
I feel like going into the garage again...meep...YEAH!

That's a dodgy way to get 'U' bolts!
They would be stronger if you bent a piece of solid bar, and cut a thread on each end. Those would not pass muster with the engineering boys here, there is too much chance of them breaking, no matter how good your welding is.
Son, I am disapoint. :(

Good idea!
If the cops ever had a look at it (and lets face it, it is a cop/joe public magnet when on the road or in use at the park) you would cop so much meep if those got noticed, and your work is too good for that.
Add to that the stress they would be under on a bad road, and the brittleness factor of localized heat from welding, and it just aint worth the risk for the minor cost saving.

No idea.
Probably a few hundred hours by now.
I'll probably be tinkering with it for the next few years, getting all the bugs worked out before making a copy and selling the prototype.
(The reason being; It's got enough patches and weld lines to make Frankenstein say "DUDE. WTF?!)
Goat's right about the Italian Dressing thing. Just take a Vidalia or red onion cut into rings and soak overnight for a nicely different little snacky. -Good on sammiches.

A little technical help here would be greatly appreciated...

I wanna install a pipe burner or two in the buffalo.
Something like this:
Before anybody panics, the (poorly rendered) propane tank will actually sit on a little fold-down rack on the back of the smoke chamber about 2" above the firebox (which is both insulated and won't be in use the same time as the propane anyway)
I have plans for 1" x 40" pipe burner(s) under the RF plate and was wondering if anyone could help with the spacing of the slots, number of burners needed and where to position it/them.
I could put one or two above the plate but it would be 4-1/2" below the grilling surface.
(Too close...?)
(Just right for high-temp grilling...?)
Any useful thoughts/ideas would be appreciated and possibly rewarded.

Oh, I should add that the idea was that for long cooks you don't really gain any more smoke flavor after four hours. I could let the wood fire die, light up the propane and finish the cook more easily since the temps on a propane unit wouldn't change as much as a wood fire.
So I could just set it and go take a nap for a few hours without it flaring up or dying out on me.

All the multi-burner BBQs that I have seen have the burners spaced out at about 6-8 inches apart. ( The flame length on each side of the burner runs out at about 2-1/2" - 3'). The height sounds about right, maybe bring them a little closer to the plate if you want to be able to grill on it (3-1/2" - 4") . The holes are usually about 1/2"-3/4" apart, but make sure that they are the right size for your gas flow etc.
Are suitable burners available to buy commercially? If you can find some, go take some measurements. I know I can get replacement burners here, so maybe check out the local BBQ store.
If you want to use it like an oven to finish roasting your meat after the smoke has done it's thing, you would probably need to fit the burners above the bottom plate so that the plate itself doesn't trap and absorb too much heat.
The best way to mount the gas cylinder is to get a couple of forklift-style cylinder brackets and mount them on a vertical surface well clear of the firebox. Make sure that the regulator and feed line can take any radiant heat, or are well shielded (like the cylinder), because too much heat on the regulator may affect your gas flow in ways you won't like. There is a reason that lines and things are kept away from the hot parts of a BBQ, and you may have to find a way to mount everything much lower than your picture suggests. A flexible delivery line and the regulator in such a position that the cylinder can sit on the ground when in use may be the better way to go. You could mount it on the draw-bar for transport, using a base-plate and one cylinder bracket as a clamp.
I would strongly recommend keeping as much of the gas system as possible as far below the heat of the firebox and oven as you can.

You didn't read the "Before anybody panics" part, did you?
I checked all the temps in the connection areas with my temp gun while burning splits (wide open) and will do so again at each step while fitting the cylinder, manifold and hose connections and especially while test-firing the burners.
You can relax man. I've prepped boilers for freaking CAL-OSHA inspections.
Fretting over gas lines and finding hot spots is second nature.
The RF plate is supposed to absorb heat, btw. The entire unit is built heavy to have a good heat mass. This keeps the temps stable.
All I really need is for the burners to keep adding BTUs to that mass.
I was just toying with the idea of using the burners as a more direct source of heat for high-temp grilling.

Good idea about checking with the barbecue supply places though.
I already looked and you can order extendable burner kits, but they're only a couple of feet long.
This leads me to believe that a single pipe burner would give me plenty of heat at 40".
Nothing for it, but to try.
If I get blowed up, Beachgoat and Wendy get the barbecue.
