On a related note, I just got a new job. Started on December 22 after being laid off back in November.

Being in a job that doesn't hinge on a company's financial success is awesome.

Heather - Design and mechanical engineering with a side of process engineering and continuous improvement. Six Sigma, Lean, Kaizen and all that kind of jive. Basically, I design, build, program and support the things that manufacturers use to make money.

Phlebas - Yeah I know. It's been quite a while. I've been out of automotive for about 3 years and work has been stable until just before the holidays. Engineering budgets have dried up, vendors want to know where their money is cuz they ain't getting paid. It's been pretty ugly since about September and I'm afraid this company has about hit the end of the road. The Wife and I want to GTFO but with her due to deliver a little wotak in Feb, it's not the best time. I've been hoping this meep would keep stumbling along until summer, or pick up and return to normal. Right now I'm not sure it'll be another 30 days.

A lot of people seem to be heading to Texas, I guess you can buy a house here for like 15 California bucks or 10 yankee dollars. Four of the houses that were vacant in my neighborhood are filled up now and all the vehicles have out of state plates.

for some reason, despite all the folks losing their jobs and such, i have a desire to leave my job and become unemployed. I think i've gone crazy.

The entire Midwest is meeped up the meep right now. Don't ignore the feeling of impending doom, start searching for another job in your area NOW.

Man, I hope you got better sense than me and save some money while you can just in case, I think DS is right. I've got strikes against but I have been actively looking for a job for 4 months and things just seem to keep getting slower and worser.

Looks like the cirmeepstances surrounding leaving my last job are going to make unemployment compensation a nonentity. I'm ready to get an alternate ID and/or return to a life of crime.

Start your own company. Design some cheap stuff for broke people, outsource the manufacture to China, and retire.

I guess I'm rather fortunate that my unemployment benefits (although not hardly enough to live on) can be extended up to 20+ weeks.

The last time this happened "91" we did RIF's. But my company goes by reviews not seniority. Which is kewl. This time around we learned our lesson i.e. when it did pick back up we were short handed and lost close to 1 meelyun in business due to lack of man power. So, the production side is guarenteed for the next 3 years for sales "due to LARGE deposits" and they are moving some of that money to the service side to keep us there. Maybe 4 more months before they decide to drop the axe? Dunno.............. but they used there heads for once

Man that's quick and dirty news. Won't be any probleem with unemployment anyway. Lotsa ways to make money under the table (literally if you like), especially if you have tools, talent and transport. Once again, good luck unloading the abode.

Not a bad idea about selling your meat. The BBQ shack idea worked for this old guy up the street from my sis. He quit his nuclear power job, worked 8 months out of the year, and is retiring and selling his BBQ business after 8 years. All from a shack in the front yard. You have the skills. Besides, you can combine it with drinking and make it a meeping dream job.

I'm not laid off yet, but we were just notified this morning of a company-wide 25% reduction in work hours. My wife works for the same company, too, so that's a double-hit.

I just survived a 26 employee layoff.I<code>m kind of shocked since my 1 year anniversary is 2.28 and they got rid of people who had 15 years or so under their belt.It</code>s an "open shop"where 50% of the workers are union,so the shop is run like everyone is in the union.I sure as meep don`t plan on joining any time soon.Why pay dues when I would reap the benefits of any contract negotiating they go through,ya know?

I guess when it was time to cut heads,they totally threw the seniority factor out the window and the union didn`t do a damned thing for any of them.

I got a call from one of the customers I supported for 3 years before I joined the unemployment lines. Their head of Engineering asked for a resume and wants me to interview next week. It could be good and it would include relocation to a warmer location: NC.

I'm semi-stoked. We'll see what happens.
