Temporary Credit Cards
My wife signed up for that mail order movie rental thing at blockbuster back in December. They were offering first month free trial and she couldn't resist. I thought it was stoopit 'cause we hardly ever rent movies. Surely we'd never get enough movies in a month to make the $18 worth while but, whatever she did it before I could stop her and we'll live with the consequences.
She only put like three movies on her list before she remembered why we never rent movies. Blockbuster never has movies we want to see. So, they came in the mail a few days later and they sat there on top of the TV in their envelopes for a few weeks before we found time to watch them and we mailed them back. That was it. All finished.
Never added any more movies to the list and never received any more in the mail. And, most surprisingly, never were billed for another month and even more surprisingly, never heard from blockbuster again. Turns out the credit card that Mrs Barch used to create our account expired at the end of December.
How happy was I? Pretty meepin' happy I don't mind tellin' ya.
This gave me another fantastic idea. Wouldn't it be teh awesomest if credit card issuers provided "Temporary Credit Card" service? Imagine, you could login to your citibank.com account and click "issue temporary card" and a few days later, you receive a new card that expires in 30 days. Then you'd be able to sign up for "first month free" offers without worrying that you'll wind up making eighteen meeping calls to customer service before you can close your "free" account.

actually, a lot of cards offer this. citicards do, i know. go to their website and login to your card, then you can make a new card number that's temporary (or many) and use it/them. it's not a physical card, but it does expire. they've set it up for those concered about internet purchases, but I don't see why it couldn't be used on paper forms too.

Blockbuster Online has tons of movies not available in store. Lots of great choices.
Temporary Cards are offered by almost every bank. You tell them what the maximum credit line and/or expiration date you want is and they give you a temp. number.

Chex is correct, Blockbuster Online has a ton more movies available than in the store.
The advantage of blockbuster over Netflix is that once you have copied, err watched the movies they mail you, you can take those in a trade them in for other movies in the store. And as soon as you the swap is made, they send you the next stuff on your wish list.
