Scammed Hard
I had assumed there would have been piles of jokes within the walls of LS, for my stupidity - apparently not as of yet.
Before I give the IRC nigknits a chance, I'll throw the story together just incase someone here at LS is on the same dumb level as me.
Last night, I received an email from Paypal, telling me that there was some unusual activity in my account. "By clicking this link, access your account and update your banking information"
OK, I SHALL.
I went to Paypal, did what I had to do and then went and meepd, or something.
I wake up in the morning and find that I cannot get a pack of smokes with my debit card. My card has been rejected. meeping meeps. To make a long story short, the Paypal site was a mock, and my information went straight to some mexicans or something who enjoyed stealing all my money and pretty much cleaning out my checking account. Lutefisk and the boys told me I was a victim of stupidity, and "phishing". I cannot help that I surf like an infant, but maybe you can.
Anyone else ever been scammed by the nets?

Did your e-mail look something like this:
Dear sahlgoode@netscape.net , We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your PayPal account from a different IP address. If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you. However, if you did not initiate the log ins, please visit PayPal as soon as possible to check-up your account information:
http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run Thanks for your patience. Sincerely, PayPal
Please do not reply to this e-mail. Mail sent to this address cannot be answered.
I clicked on the link, but AdWatch wouldn't let me open the page so I copied, and pasted it into my browser. It took me to Paypal. I hit their "Contact us" , and pasted the above e-mail along with a brief expaination of my history with them, (non-exsistent)and how the link didn't work.
When they contacted me ( for some reason I didn't save their answer, only this e-mail) it was explained to me that the e-mail was not sent by them, the link was bogus, and they were going to investigate. I never heard from them again.
Obviously the link was masked.
Too bad Dent. I hope you can get it all straightened out.

You called your credit card company? Most of them are pretty good about theft.
Good luck!

Sadly most of us have recieved that same email for the scam PayPal site. Since I hardly ever use Paypal I just delete the email and go about being a meeptard in my usual manner but keep my pennies safe.

Hey Dent, I've got some stupid nigerians who are going to put $97 million in my bank account any day now. I just sent them all my banking info and $10 K to help them cover their expenses.
I'll cut you in for a quarter mill for an investment of $50K.

Ok since you got your money back I can now say this: even my nearly 60 year old father doesn't fall for those scams. I mean, dude. He even showed me how they get phising scams in their email at work all the time, and showed me how it went to a legit-looking website. In the future, definitely do what the other members say: log into the actual PayPal/bank website itself, no clicking links. Definitely sucks that that happened.

While I have never been held up at gun point, mugged etc, I can assume the feeling of having money taken right from under a middle class secure meep would feel about the same. The difference is you did not look the thieves in the face or feel the cold hard steel against your skin while emptying your pockets on the streets. You were robbed in your home, while you sat safe and secure and did not even realize it was happening. I am not laughing at you at all. meep happens. For you this meep happened and your first thought was how to take care of the babies.... Lucky for you the baby did not have to go a day without a clean meep and Papa came home with money in his pockets. And in the future Papa will safe guard his meep a little more better so the baby will always have a clean meep.
