I searched Craigs List for this model for a couple of months, and finally found a good one. Original owner - $2000.

Is this the Turbo model?
Is everything OEM or did the previous owner do any upgrades?
I'm not expecting that a gent like yourself will go the rice route on this specimen and hang a coffee can out the back or anything but please let me suggest 3 things.
Koni Sport shocks or similar, Good sport tires & a K&N drop in filter. The tires don't have to be expensive really. A lot of guys are getting good long wear, great grip and feel from the Hankook rs-2 which should only be about $60 a pop for your size. Nice sporty alternative for a daily driver tire. You can order them from tirerack.com or edgeracing.com
Take that thing to a local autocross!! Good luck trying to wipe the smile off your face.

As far as all season/performance tires go, I'm in love with my Avons. They're quiet, they grip like velcro on my Saab (my pops is running them on his Mini, too), and they're under the radar enough to still be pretty affordable. Consumer Reports had a boner for them, too.

Interior is nice - little to no sun damage. The leatherette seats each have a single tear; no big deal. More importantly, everything works (except cruise-control which I never use anyway). And it passed emissions (a requirement in Cal for title transfer).
