I have one person who works for me. She's competent and hardworking. We had a large fundraising event on Sunday and as a reward for her good work, I gave her yesterday off. But I've just caught her in a most awkward lie. She left a voicemail that said she wouldn't be in today because she has a migraine and back pain. Truth is, I have it from reliable sources that she's not home at all--she's been in Atlantic City with her husband since yesterday. Now in larger companies, this would be simple case of "sry, u lied to yr boss, GTFO." But we're small and I depend on her for a great deal.
So...Do I drop the hammer on her or look the other way? By the way, MY BOSS also knows she's playing hooky. What to do...what to do???

Fuck it, I'm sure you bullshitted to get days off without a hassle. She's trying to save her job but have a bit of fun at the same time.

Not that I've had to manage people, but if she had the sick time coming to her, and didn't knowingly flake out in the middle of something crucial, who cares about the reason given? Plenty of people call in and claim headache when they just want to chill at home for the day; this doesn't seem substantially different.

I'd say let her slide for a couple of reasons:
1) Truth is, I have it from reliable sources that she's not home at all--she's been in Atlantic City with her husband since yesterday. This can be viewed as creepy gestapo tactics. As a boss myself I'd plug my ears to the 'source' and make "naaaa naaaa" noises. The system asks for a reason to take a sick day and she provided one, leave it at that, unless every other employee is under the exact same scrutiny when they phone in sick.
2) What Vas said.
3) This might hurt a bit, but you might want to explore why she couldn't straight up ask for the time off.
4) Firing people sucks dude, it makes you old before your time, makes you hate your job, makes you stay up at night wondering if their kids will be ok, etc. If you have the oppurtunity to let someone slide it feels awesome, and you get "leverage over the man-animal".

This is hardly something worth firing over, especially if she's valuable.
Ask her how she feels, then tell her that you know about Atlantic city and that lying is bad. Let her know that you considered firing her because of lying, but don't.

i can see that turning shit super-awkward. i would definitely leave out the 'i'm holding an axe over your head and could drop it at any second' talk.
if you need to address it, i'd approach it along the lines of 'i heard some stuff that i would rather not have. regardless of whether it's true, i hope i'm the type of manager you can come to and be honest with about anything' (ala lk's point 3).
did you discuss this with your boss?

mundhra: my boss's words to me were "you handle that." So I will, but I'm not gonna can her for taking an extra day off. I like the approach of asking her to level with me about why she didn't ask for the time off. Maybe as a bonus I'll give her a case of the guilts.

Eh, I've been there before in your position. When she gets back just let her know that you know she was in AC and just ask her to be honest in the future. Your not a bad person for calling your boss and telling them your gonna burn a sick day because you want to do something else, that is, IF you have the sick time available. Also, if it wans't in the middle of something seriously deadline related that will now fail because she did the hookie thing I wouldnt worry about it. Be cool with your subordinates, they are the ones that make you shine in the end.
