some of you may remember a journal entry i did back around december about a potential new job. well, HR took their pretty little time to process me though, and i finally landed at the new job on monday. so this is a little update for you all. so far, it seems to be working out.
good things:
i forgot about all the neat people who visit colleges. Robert Kennedy was here recently and i'm working with some footage of his speech regarding the environment and stuff. also former pres bush will be coming to my city next month (at another school). i probably won't go, but it's something i would have probably never had heard of at my old job. and eventually someone important/interesting is bound to come by that i'll see.
they seem to be pretty open to my requests for equipment and such. they're already planning on ordering me a wacom tablet (which to me is really necessary, i feel crippled without it) and whatever software i feel i need.
i have way more computers than one person can practially use. i'm talking about 5 g4/g5 macs and one pc that looks like a server (it has massive server case at least). it seems the pc is there just to run the dvd duplicator. also the 30" widescreen lcd monitor is nice.
just read in the student paper that they may do a 6% raise across the board for all employees. add this to the slight pay increase the new position gave me already, i'll be looking at much more money coming in than i'm used to. at my old job i was lucky to get a 3% raise a year.
other things:
i'm now working on a mac, where i was used to windows boxes only. most of the software is different, and it's taking me a little while to get used to it all.
the equipment is set up.....oddly. bnc connectors are adapted to rca's and there are no xlr audio hookups in sight. so, it amounts to the fact that they've got these pro decks but they're wired like consumer equipment (or sometimes through consumer equipment). it works, but it seems like an odd way of working to me. no studio monitors for audio. they have an impresive looking logitech thx speaker system, but i seriously doubt it's a flat frequency response speaker system
the office is a touch cluttered. i spent most of my first day reorganizing and cleaning out the office to fix this. it's way better, but with all these computers in one room, it can't help but be a little crowded i guess. i'm considering proposing a move to another room, but that'll have to wait until after spring break.
bad things:
so far i can't really think of any. it's really too early to tell. unless the macs start giving me trouble and i want to kill them, but i'm willing to give them a chance first.
