should i stay or should i go?
12-29-2005 at 03:01 pm

well, late in 2005, i interviewed for a job at the big local community college, SAC (San Antonio College). It was for a "multimedia specialist" position. since i've been working in video and such, it seems like a job i could do.

so, if you're seeing this journal entry, that means that they've come back from winter break and offered me the job. now, i have to decide if i want to accept it or not.

current job:
"assistant specialist" in multimedia/video department. "assistant" in title only - i don't work under another video person or anything, it's just the pay scale i'm on.

workplace: local general (mostly industial/technological) research institute

current job duties:
anything under the sun concerning video. shoot video. capture video. edit video. sex-up video. pre-production. post production. dvd authoring. dvd burning. dvd menus. photoshop things for video. afftereffect things for video. use lightwave rarely for video. use flash rarely for video. audio recording. audio editing. audio mixing. the list goes on, but this gives you the gist.

doing all these things can be tiring, but also rewarding.

pro/con aspects of job:
working with lots of different types of projects.
doing boring and easy video as documentation & doing interesting and difficult video for trade shows & promotion.
videos for the space/etc department of the workplace.
videos for nanotechnology/etc of the workplace
videos for military projects of workplace.
dealing with 2 to 3 bosses at a time:
director of department (boss of boss) is generally unpleseant to work under, but fortunately seldomly interacted with.
next lower boss (department manager) is good to get along with
the lowest boss is nice, but doesn't really do much of anything anyway
have to worry about keeping my time "billable" and not idling away (while i think this is more of a boss's task)
about a 20min commute (~10 mi.)
been here for about 5 yrs now, but they kept me on as a "temp" for about 2.5 yrs. doing the same job, even for about a year after both the full time video guys left before they signed me as permanant (in other words, a "temp" and a "student" were running the video dept for a while - the "student" being in the same boat as me). i know i shouldn't, but it still bothers me that this went on for as long as it did, and i still have a bad taste in my mouth about it. they offered no signon bonus or apologies about it either.

new job:
senior? multimedia specialist

workplace: local community college - educational atmosphere

pro/con aspects of new job (although still mostly speculative):
working with mostly macs (i'm used to pc's)
working with cute students running around everywhere (although not working directly with/for them)
practically within walking distance to home (~10 blocks)
probably not as interesting work. lots of dvd duplication and not as much content creation
probably will have more time to work on my own artwork while on the job
bosses seem nice/likeable
coworkers may not have much common interests as me (but this is not unlike my current job)
a longer work week (40 vs 32) but slightly more pay
more vacation time (10 days for xmas alone)
working towards an educational goal, and not a business goal
probably is a budgeted position so no more worrys about time being billable

all in all, it looks to be less/easier work, more hours, and more pay.

both jobs seem pretty secure, and both with good benefits. with the institute probably having slightly better dental/retirement and the college with more vacation. medical is probably even. but i haven't seen much about any of this from the college so i'm probably talking out my ass. both offer some sort of free education. the college is only at their schools though (which are all 2 yr colleges) and the insitute may pay for up to PhD level, if you can convince management.

neither job seems to have much in the way of career advancement - there's nowhere for a video guy to move up to except maybe to management or something. the college may have the possibility of moving on to teaching though.

any other job factors i'm forgetting?

what do you guys think? is it time to move on?

Sounds like you're leaning towards a change. My brother was hired by a college to be their webmaster and then a year later became an assistant professor. For me, the deciding factor (since they are similar in pay) would probably be the people I work with.

It sounds like a great opportunity for you and of course you would not have applied and interviewed if you were not in the mood for a career change in the first place.

The college will be very rewarding--the industy is a dead soul rasping in the winter storm.

I warn you that university politics are retarded. Academia tend to act like retarded children fighting over a minarette--none know how to handle it, but they all think they can do it better. And who gets to play with the toys? the most popular! Plenty of petty internecine battles over salt marshes, but that's the professors, not the "janitors" and people who keep the place running...

Now the other side of that coin is the near-governmental beurocratic nature of employment at a college; state colleges [ut system] are just about gravy for anyone working in them--you really can't get fired unless you commit a crime! Smaller 2-yr colleges might not be as lax, but I suspect there is a substantial lassitude in the work ethic.

Plus, it's more enriching to be around naive college students than hard-boiled marketroids and corporate raiders.

Is it a vacation? sure. but's it's moving on up to a deluxe apartment...

Go for it, the academic world is a great place to be. Ive been working at a university for fifteen years and its great. The entertainment value you get from the pissing contests that go on between professors is worth the price of admission alone and you cant beat the job security.

here's the way i see it (correctly). if you take the job and don't like it, you can always leave. if you don't take the job and decide later you should have, you're screwed.

take it, but remember you can leave whenever you want.

Can you transfer my enormous porn collection which is in Beta videotape format to DVD?

Seriously, take the new job. You are young and more experiences like this new job can only help in the long run.

I say, keep the job you have. Time means something, and obviously, they love you if they kept you as a temp for so long and then brought you onto the payroll (corporate always sucks) .

The jobs sound basically the same; why move laterally? Of course, the college seems to sweeten the pot a little bit, but is it really worth all the hassle of a new job? And are you absolutely POSITIVE they're not going to lay you off in six months for a savvy on-campus college intern who will work for credits?

I think you're just bored with your job...aka, ask for/suggest new projects and LEAD them.

A job change every year says nothing to a future employer, but a decent amount of time at one company with multiple, innovative and/or successful projects says a hell of a lot more on a resume.

Let's face it, jobs aren't falling off the money tree nowadays...

This is awesome.

This is the first pornsite I've found in years that I'd actually advertise to swarmers. When you first load it up, it looks just like every crappy scam site out there, except that it's real. It's huge, it's updated constantly, there's no spam, no popups, and no bullshit -- and it's completely free. When you sign up through that link above and respond to the confirmation email, I make a bit of loose change.

See what other swarmers have to say about it. People love this place, so I feel fine about sending you there and am confident you will enjoy boners.
