ok so latley i've been considering moving and doing something new. i'm more or less apathetic about my current job, and growing so with the city i'm in. right now i'm trying to figure out what my options are, trying to figure out what will work.
here's the situation, in a nutshell. i'm currently doing video/multimedia work for a research institute. what this means is i get to be a guru at shooting and editing video, while doing added graphics in after effects, editing the audio for the projects, authoring the dvd's, re-rendering for web/flash/powerpoint/etc. in other words, the whole shebang of video, excepting 3d. while the benifits are good, for all the crap i have to deal with and be knowledgeable about, the pay is not what i would like it to be. as in way below the average video editor for even this low-paying town. in fact, at my job, i am just out of reach of being elligable for food stamps. not exactly what i was expecting with a college degree, although still better than many of my friends. i've managed to miraculously make some savings, which are rapidly delpeting on me somehow.
now, before they're all gone, i'd like to try to GET OUT.
i really would like to become a fulltime artist, focusing on photography and/or video (mostly photography). it's not happening here. or at the very least, working for myself. for a while i was considering trying to open a very small resturant, so i'm open to options.
i'm thinking california(too expensive?), i'm thinking newyork(too big?). i'm thinking canada(too cold?). i'm thinking amsterdam(too stoned?). i thought about nawlins(too drunk), but it's underwater, so that's out.
somewhere where it is good to make/sell art is prefered, with a dayjob if necessary. somewhere somewhat liberal, or at least relaxed, is prefered.
i've given this some thought, and i know i'll need to sell a shitload of stuff to make this happen, and i'm willing to do it. but i know i'll need some support(that is, someone to get drunk with) wherever i'll go, as i'm not as quick to make friends as i'd like. i'm crawling in my skin staying here where i don't feel like i'm going anywhere.
does the swarm have any words of wisdom?

Come to Canada. It's only below zero for about 8 months of the year. The people are generally nice and you can pretty much be or do anyting you want as long as you don't piss anyone off. Only downside is the squirrels. Fucking squirrels.

i'd suggest boulder co, or sedona or flagstaff az, but they're all full of californians and the cost of living is through the roof. boston probably qualifies as "too big". portsmouth nh or portland me would work, but the boston sprawl is overtaking them. ithaca ny or burlington vt? albuquerque nm? austin tx? hawaii?

What you are describing is a little town on the Delaware River in Eastern PA.
It's called New Hope. It was mostly abandonned in the 50's. Became an artist colony in the 60's and 70's. Several parts of town have been extensively restored to their original state. It was built in the 1650's as I recall.
It's become a bit more commercial now. A lot of the stores sell the usual tourist crap but a lot of them also sell really exotic stuff, cool antiques old books and original art and sculpture.
It's about an hour and a half to NYC and about an hour to Philly.
Check it out. I think it's what you're looking for.

Dallas is a rocking, affordable city for young folks. I spent 13 years there. I moved there when I was 26. There are plenty of jobs and even a movie studio in Las Colinas. Check it out.

Come to Australia. We have everything you need, and the beer is strong enough that it is all you need to make friends.

consider austin and dallas out. austin has become way too expensive to live in lately, and dallas....well it's fucking dallas - i've been there a few times and i didn't really like it. but i do have a freind or two out there, so i'll chat with them about it anyway.
honestly, i'd like to get out of texas for a while (i'm actually in san antonio right now).
specialk & dragonstaff: moving to another country actually sounds pretty appealing to me, but i don't know anything about how to go about it. should i do immigration or living abroad? what does each entail? and moving the things i want to keep would end up being mucho expensive if i were to go overseas. on top of that, i have a cat that it would be very hard on.
breezysummerday: that's one of the problems i have with my work. there's really noone to network with. the video "studio" i work in has a grand total of 3 people; and i'm pretty much the senior of the 3, although we're all pretty equal. as for the rest of the institute; am i gonna network with the guys who work on cars out here? i actually have some good contacts with some chevron folks, but where is that gonna take me? sure, it'd be cool to work in the space, fire, or ballistics areas at my work, but they don't have a need for someone with my skills, or else i'd already know about it. i rarely work with anyone in my field (or anywhere i'd like to go) out here. it's pretty isolated and that's what i want to get away from. was there something in particular you're thinking of that i'm missing? i'm open to ideas, and "meh, you don't network" doesn't really help me very much.
azron123: that actually sounds pretty appealing. i'll look into it.

okay, did not realize you are all ready in Tx. I hear there is some gulf front property in NO going cheap....
oops, I degress. I am now in the NE corner of NJ, which is a VERY expensive place to live relative to any city in Tx, but wayy cheaper than living in a metropolitan area like NYC or Boston. Azron mentioned New Hope in PA, there are many other smaller towns (Milford, PA) in the area which appeal to the NYC and metropolitan tourist weekend warriors. You could open a photography business or work for one while finding a co-op location retail location for your freelance work. There will be a LOT of competition depending upon what you choose to focus your business on (weddings, corporate events, promotional, school or group photography) but once you build a customer base, you can pretty much get away with charging an arm & a leg for your work and give shitty customer service. It's just how things are done in the Northeast. BTW- I do some photography as a hobby and I do earn a little extra ca$h, but I am not a *real* professional. I just like to shoot music students which is a nitch I have been working as a stage mom. Our family business is a CD/CVD manufacturer sales office/broker. Our customers all over the country come to us with digital artwork that has to be edited or even just created. Often, we have wondered aloud how nice it would be to have access to a good graphics designer (don't know if that interests you), but it would be a P/T position. PM me if any of this babble sounds interesting. It would be a good excuse to join us at BBP 5.2 and check this area out on your way through.

Working overseas is not really difficult. All you need is a passport and a working visa, your local travel shop should have all the info you need.
As for the rest of it why not start working for yourself? My brother did it and just recently sold his first tv show(more of a doco) to a major network. Don't ask me how he did it but he met someone who had the idea and my brother had the experience to make it work. Surely you could something like that?

| Sexual Asspussy | This is awesome.
This is the first pornsite I've found in years that I'd actually advertise to swarmers. When you first load it up, it looks just like every crappy scam site out there, except that it's real. It's huge, it's updated constantly, there's no spam, no popups, and no bullshit -- and it's completely free. When you sign up through that link above and respond to the confirmation email, I make a bit of loose change.
See what other swarmers have to say about it. People love this place, so I feel fine about sending you there and am confident you will enjoy boners.
