"Lassie through a Hog's Head of Real Fire..."

THIS.

Not to be an meep, but I didn't feel like ordering expensive 5/4" birch for the Wells Fargo chest. (Supposed to be pine or hickory)
I'll edge it in oak though(as the originals were) so it shouldn't be an issue.
To save some time and money I'm planing a couple of 2x8'sdown to 1".

Anybody need a sh#t -ton of sawdust?

Use it for mulch. Or, depending on the type of wood, you can use it for smoking (smokes a lot more than chips or chunks if you're doing something like fish). All of which assumes it's not treated in any way.

I'll take a bucket

I have a block of cherry wood I was thinking of running through the planer for dust to use for smoking.
(I don't think all this doug fir would work.)
When I first started the smoker project I bought a thing called the A-maze-ing Smoker. It was just a little giimicky zigzag thing made of expanded metal. You put these guys' proprietary smoking dust into it and light it and it would smolder for hours, giving your charcoal or propane barbecue that good old wood-fired smokey flavor.
But seriously, F#CK that thing.
I never could get it to stay lit.

Does dust really burn longer than a chunk of wood?

Yeah.(depending on how you define "burn")
If you can get the damned thing lit properly, the fire slowly burns a tunnel through the dust (like a cigar) and the heat and limited oxygen causes the dust to become charcoal before igniting.
-or so the barbecue guys on the website say.
They COULD be full of sh#t.

Also this:

I should've planed the wood to within a half inch and then let it sit a few days to dry. (It was wetter than than your mom was that time she took you to senior prom)
It's doing it's damndest to warp but I've got enough clamps to totally thwart that little meep.

...something doesn't look right.

Hm. Yeah; too tall.

There we go.

@BigDinWaunakee

There was a saw-mill near where I lived as a kid in the '60's and '70's that had a saw-dust fire out the front that burnt continuously for well over twenty years. All you could actually see of it was a pile of saw-dust with a wisp of smoke coming out of it, but the pile never really changed size, it just got a fresh layer put on it every week.

Oscar's bookcase:

There's also a pin and washer that'll hold the bottom of the bookcase against the wall and a spring that'll "kick" the bookcase open a little when the catch is lifted.

I might do it myself.
This is the entry to my room addition:

It's perfect.

Got back in the garage and did some work on the Wells Fargo chest today.

I cut a sucker rod end that fits my anvil to use for reaching in there and backing the rivets up as I peen them.

I went through a small box and a half of #18 nails.
There were a sh#tload of rivets and it took all day.

Now all that's left are the corner braces l, some paint and stencil work.

Looking good, mate.

Oh yeah...
Leather handles, too.

Thanks

That's some square cleavage

Didn't get 'em nailed in due to the garage being a f#cking furnace.
Will continue next weekend. (I hope)

Thankfully there're some tasks I can take indoors...

I read that the originals were painted all over(incuding the leather handles)
I didn't like the idea of covering that beautiful black steel for fear of making it look like a toy, but now that it's painted I think it doesn't look all that bad.
I suppose I can live with it.

They used a copper arsinate paint on the originals to stop rot/rust, hence the black/green color. Worked great in a day when most folks died in their 40s.

Overspray.

I am slightly annoyed by it.

Noice.

But it does seem a shame to cover all that nice timber and steel and leather with paint. Just sayin'.

True. I didn't want to do it, but I already made one with the metal unpainted.

@spankerchief

Thanks for the link. (I bookmarked your gallery).

Here we go:

Scaled down to @17"x13"x12" (Give or take. The lid makes it weird)
Inside measure: 12"x9"x7"

I am already annoyed by this project (Read; having fun)
