Linkswarm's West Coast Drunken Meandering, (Mild)Debauchery & Family Barbecue Aug 12, 13 & 14th

Time to pull our collective meep out of our Wal-Mart desk chairs and get a little meepin' SUNLIGHT.

I've got the food and campsite covered at the beautiful Montana De Oro in San Luis Obispo.

Tents and campers are welcome. There are restrooms, but no showers.
Hotels are available nearby for those delicate souls who wanna be meep about it.

Let's do this.

Don't change plans on my account; I'm just trying to gauge whether this means I should bring mine, too.

@BeachGoat

Okay kids.
Is this going to be a drunken and disorderly slightly homoerotic festival of manliness with meep-tons of charred meat off the grill and alcohol of dubious mixture,
Or a family-friendly social outing featuring stirring lectures on spousal communication and tiny little cumeepber sandwiches?

Choose wisely

Also:

As for as the Goat camp is concerned, Rosie sees this as another reason for the wimmins to do dishes. Ain't gonna get roped into a bunch of drunken assholes making a mess. She's already raised her teenagers.

Picture Wilma Flintstone...."You boys go off and do your Lodge duties, Betty & I will stay home and hold down the fort"

I still need a rough head-count for making the reservations.
How many spots will we need?
-And if this is gonna turn into a "family" trip, I'll be forced to bring the kids. There will probably be whining from all involved, so I'd like to space us out a little farther.

Does this mean we should start gathering leaf for the smoker? Nothing like stoned chicken wings...

Ahhhhh...no. Please.

We should make reservations soon, BTW.
I'd hate to find out it's booked solid because we waited to long.

Again, MDOro. Cheaper, not as crowded, and nearer to civilized conveniences like liquor, groceries, ice, gas, and things like kayaking and surfing (within ten miles). Also not touristed out, and not over booked...YET

Also, San Simeon Beach, in the shadow of Hearst Castle, has a nice spot along a creek. It is at the base of the Big Sur drive of Highway One (which it really is a drive, rather than a destination). Big Sur is a Myth of 60 or so miles of winding narrow roadway that hangs on a cliff and shows you great views of meep you will never touch or see up close. The few spots you can stop are so overpriced and privatized, that unless you actually know people who live there, you might as well bleed money from you hair before you get away from crowds and see real nature.

Of course, my lens is from a few decades back, and my cynicism has made me bitter...

It is still one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Okay, then...

MDO has several advantages...it is within easy reach of stores, kayaking, surfing, and regular freeways (101). Pismo Beach (Hi, Bugs Bunny!), S-Boxes' folks, my house, and sandy beaches are all nearby, plus it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. And it isn't crowded. But don't take my word for it. Downside is the space limit.

San Simeon has a lot more sites, but is further north. The good part about that is if anyone WANTS to go for a day trip up the coast and actually SEE Big Sur, it is only a couple hours up and back. Also the Elephant Seal rookery (barking three thousand pound dog turds), a narrow winding road on a five hundred foot cliff, and six dollar gas. But worth it to do at least once in your life. Pluses...155 sites, as opposed to the 45 at MDO, and it's a pretty nice spot, and fire/dog friendly. Not as scenic, nor as close to conveniences, but further from the nearest law (40 miles).

Don't make me pick.

I'm gonna vote Montana De Oro.

^ Also

I'll pay the $150 group rate.
Not sure if the site is big enough for everybody. Somebody else will need to chip in, otherwise.

That's $450 from ME by the way, so lets get this voted on and make reservations before the crack wear off.

I'm all about the further north, coming as I'll be from even further north, but I'm cool with whatever you fellas decide. I would like to hear some more opinions about the family outing vs. drunken debauchery angle, though.

@MstrLance No reason we can't mix the two.

@Beachgoat Is the camp area limited to the flat treeless spots?
I wanted to be under some canopy during the day if possible.

Flat/treeless is the beach area. Campsites are the pines in the upper left.

My prospects look rather dismal, but if spanky or somebody has a paypal acct. I could probably throw $20-$30 at it.

Awww meep! I'll join you guys if you go bar hopping in LA. I'm too domesticated nowadays for camping. Central Coast isn't exactly around the corner for me but it's beautiful. The wifey likes driving up there alot (she HATES camping...).

Rosarito was and still may be a great place to drink beer, hook up, hooker up and set off fireworks on the beach at night. Take brownies but don't light meep up unless you want a private tour of the law enforcement facilities.

Also, I f you don't have your Med Card, expect little sympathy and much whiskey. Non-transferable to non Californy residence. Sorry
I can Cook!

@BeachGoat!
Help a brother out here...
I can't make heads or tails of this goddamned reservation system
And nobody's answering the phone at the numbers they give.
Can you make the reservation and I'll call them afterward and pay 'em?

Okay the ones I'm looking at say they're "primitive" with pit toilets and no showers...

Nevermind @BeachGoat.
I has done it.

I got us two spots, so we're good for up to sixteen humans and six vehicles.
(I went for sites 44 and 45, but it might be first-come-first serve)

I'm okay with folks bringing family, BTW.
I'll reserve another spot if need be.
