Spanky's Second Annual Toaster Build

Okay boys and girls. We're going back to the simple, easily defined contest.

If I don't get any players this time, I'll dumb it down even further.
(Please don't make me do this.)

Ahem...

I'll give this chest as a reward to the best home-made toaster.

(Coins not included, but I may doctor the chest up with some carving/inlay)

Same rules as last year:

No parts from an actual toaster

Other than that, ANYTHING GOES.

Decider: LORDKAHUNA

LORDKAHUNA

Before I re-task my R&D team to toasting technology... what are the exact dimensions, weight and capacity (in liters) of this extraordinarily vessel proffered as trophy.

Dimensions: 17" wide, 12" deep and 13" tall. Weight: @40lbs.(18 kilos)
Capacity: @6 liters.

When does it close?

When we've got enough entries to make it interesting. That'll probably take until @August.

I am in this again. Hopefully I will actually get something built this year.

I thought you engineer types were all supposed to be math whiz's. 17x13x12 works out to be a lot closer to 11 1/2 gallons than 6 liters.

As I promised back in March, I have actually produced a toaster this year!

(As I seem to be the only entry, I do not really expect a chest to be sent to Australia (Pepper has got it anyway) STOP HITTING ME, SON!).

Gather materials

Secondhand plywood and a speed-control resistor from an electric Crown walkie-stacker.

Old Aluminium printers masters

And a car battery (a big one from my old 60 series Landcruiser Diesel).

Make a crude wooden box.

Line it with the aluminium and fit the resistor.

Connect jump leads to the resistor.

Add bread.

Connect the battery.

Waiting...

Waiting...

Collect plate, meeper, and Vegemite (I am an Aussie after all, got to have the Vegemite).

Waiting...

Waiting...

WE HAVE TOAST!

NOM NOM NOM!

And it's portable, folks! Just chuck it in the car and you will have toast wherever you go! (As long as you don't mind the twenty minutes it took to cook).

This was supposed to be the last pic, I pasted the wrong link somehow. (That happened twice, you can just see the printers masters behind the battery in pic 3)>

Welllll...meep.

Yeah, I saw that the day you posted it.
Been trying to come up with a way to respond that doesn't make me look like a renegging meep but doesn't reward you too handsomely for being as about an eleventh hour entry as you can get.

Seeing as I'm fresh out of chests, don't have the spare time to jump on a new one yet and am froke as buck (Christmas shopping) this presented a moral dilemma.

I think I've found a happy medium though:
I have a few locks left that just need a reasonably skilled person to build them a home.

How 'bout I send you one and you show us all yer skills when you've got your shop is up and fully running?

Sound fair?

That sounds more than fair to me. I did this more to prove my theory than anything else, and don't expect a prize for being the only entry. However...

Challenge accepted!

Excellent.
Consider it sent.

I follow all rules & regs. It's nice to have a safe place for the goodies.

Lock has been sent.
UPS tracking #EC685239926US
Should reach customs in about 3-5 days.
If what I hear about Aussie Customs is true, you should get it around...oh, March or so.

I hope they aren't that slow.

Now I have to think about available timber that will do it justice. We don't have the ready supply of good hardwood here that you enjoy. My Dad used to have to import it from the States.

Whatever you choose will be great, I'm sure.
I like the sword case you did in...birch and maple?
Mahogany and clear pine?
(Kinda hard to tell)
Very nice work though, and I think you'll do a great job.

Anyway, I sent one of my best half-mortise locks measuring seven inches between pins so you can make it pretty big and it'll still look right.

I can't wait to see what you do with it!

The sword case was made from maple plywood for the top and bottom, and meranti base-board for the sides. Cheap and nasty meep. Has some nice fiddle-back grain in it though.

I think I will try to find some maple, unless I can get enough usable planks from the accacia meep I have to get milled. Very hard, and almost black in the heartwood.

Sounds badass.
I did a chest in wenge once. I loved the tan stripes through the black, but it darkened to a uniform ebony when I tried sealing it.
It's an oily and toxic wood, but someday I'm gonna try it again.

I got a box of packing peanuts in the mail today. I wonder if there is anything buried beneath?

Ooh look! A bubble-wrap cocoon!

A beautiful, hand-made lock and key. Now I have to complete my shop setup and find some good timber. The key is solid brass and has a screamin' eagle carved in the loop at the top. Really good work.

Thank you Sir, I will attempt to do it justice. Eventually. (This could take a while)

Posted on Dec. 22 US (23rd here) and received on Jan.3. Not bad considering that we have had a four-day weekend followed by a three-day weekend. Four working days from the US to here. It takes longer for a letter to get here from Sydney.

There should be some screws in there...

Yeah, they are there, thank you.

Ah GOOD.
-and you're quite welcome!

I have at least two treasure chests to make in the next few months (One for the treasure hunt in October) and I'm going with the heirloom destruction style with different keys and handles.
(Hopefully it'll attract more swarmers to the event this year.)

I'm stoked as meep to see what you do with that lock!
No pressure :))
