AutoCAD
Anybody know anything about AutoCad?
I was gifted with the task of sketching up every goddamned building at work and I've accomplished this task twice now.
-And this will be the THIRD time, because the crappy 90's-era computer they gave me (A government machine that can't be upgraded, apparently.) -tanks every other year, taking all my files with it.
Backups would have been nice, but the guy in charge of security usually disables everything including the disk drive.
I had to copy onto a little three-inch floppy that only holds about five .dwg files then send it inside to be printed because having my own printer would give all the felons superpowers or something.
Anyway, the lovely gentleman that's usually so strict with my access finally eased up enough to leave me a functional disk drive, so I'm saving files as soon as they're made.
Trouble is though, that over half my files say "illegal file name" when I try to read them back off the disk (Brand new CD-R).
I'm running AutoCAD 97 LT.
I've been using "save file as" , (keeping the names short with no spaces and just letters and numbers) up-file clicking to D drive and saving as a .dwg file.
Does anybody know how I could be screwing this up?

I worked as a receptionist in a manufacturing place at one point. They used autocad. My attention deficit didn't like it at all, but that's to be expected. I could probably remember more about it if i was reacquainted with it though.

Ooh!
Good job, BigDin!
This sounds exactly like what's going on.
When I get back to work I'll change the name of the data file on the hard drive (to keep it from being overwritten) then see if I can reload the entire thing from the disk under the old name and hopefully it'll open after being transferred back.
I looked around on autodesk but never found that page.
Thanks again, man!

Autocad is boring, until "extrude" starts to come into play.
Then it's magic.

SC,
Yes, this info was tough to locate... I think the indexing on "illegal filename" was scarce, but a few variations on the theme brought up a few pages on ADesk's site.
Good luck with the fix and the work.
