New Laptop?
Whelp, my 2005 Inspiron 9200 is on it's last legs. I'm not really sad. This thing has been around the world with me. I've worn the paint off of it in so many places that it looks like an old, beat up guitar. The graphics card is slowly dying and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my (now) 2 year old son spilling juice into the keyboard about 6 months ago. It's been a good run, DELL. Now it's time to see how you can compete with the modern world.
I'm not even a little convinced that a netbook is the way to go. I'm completely convinced that a tablet can go meep itself with a bowling ball. I want another laptop but I'm completely unprepared to buy one. Half of me says Win7 on a dual core or quad core and half of me wants Mint on a native honey. All of me wants something powerful, maybe Lenovo, maybe...
I use my mobile gear to record (24/96 audio is a must) and I need it to have a 15 to 17 inch screen. Soundcards tend to tell Linux to go meep itself... or perhaps it's Linux that tells the soundcards? Either way, these two idiots need to get online and offer a competitive solution for semi-geeks who want audio recording and editing without bullmeep. As it stands, they're =2 a meep guy and an angry meep in a welfare apartment with 12 cats and 5 unattended litter boxes. Both of them should probably go meep themselves until they learn to get along and clean up their meep.
I have to be able to run 3D programs like SolidWorks and Google SketchUp Pro. This is such a must that I cannot stress it enough. RAM RAM RAM and a totally awesome video card are required.
What say you LINKSWARM? Sell me a laptop with moxie. ( @mundhra @vasudeva )
and hurry because this old meep is almost dead

Personally partial to Toshiba, but I don't play with audio. Currently rocking a Satellite L505D that I got for $350 on sale at Best Buy. It's Vista, but at this point I just surf the internet and load music onto my phone on it. I know at my work you can get a Toshiba with 4gigs of ram (expandable to 8) and a piddly hdd for about $500.
Do your research before you drop any decent amount of money on anything stock. I dunno if it's just my customers having the meeptiest luck ever, but right now computers seem to suck.

i love lenovos, but i don't know anything about high-end audio/video re: laptops. i would probably refrain from the pullout screen one you linked, though.

I've always dreamed of a lappy with a stylus tablet built in. I was thinking of a retractable one (cd tray style), but this'll do. I like the dual screen gimmick, too.

I'm also shopping around for a laptop.
I'm leaning towards the next gen Bonobo from System 76. (due out any day now) I'm looking forward to seeing the specs.
My main complaint is that I hate touchpads. I don't know anyone who like them. At least the pointing stick on a Lenovo is useful. If I get a touchpad only laptop, I'll have to get a clip on trackball or mouse at the same time...

Dude. Get a Mac! Besides costing 3 to 5 times as much as most other notebooks they also come severely underpowered and which for some reason makes owners of them feel ironically superior to other users.
Dude, you're getting a mac.

You want a cheaper price and a faster system with bigger, faster graphics: iBuyPower is a no-name builder that will customize just what you want. I have been buying their machines for the last 6 or 7 years exclusively and use their laptops for hard core processing as my main machine. I have 5 running 24/7 right now and the oldest one, 7 years, is still running as my daughters laptop. They may not be the most name-brand machines on the outside, but the inside is all name brand video, memory and drives.
One last word: Absolutely do not buy a laptop without a "hybrid" hard drive. I have a 500 gig 7200 rpm drive with 4 gig of onboard cache and it feels twice as fast as my regular 7200 rpm drive. Boot time is less than 1/2 of before and common OS files load instantly.
No, h8rs, I don't work for IBP, I just like their rigs as being dirt cheap. Just don't expect Dell-level phone support from them.

They are helpdesk people, which means they have typing skills and can read a script. Do you know of some consumer-facing helpdesk that is significantly different?
