First gun
Handgun that is. I've been wanting to get a gun for a while and am now taking baby steps toward it. I still need to get a "permit to acquire", which is basically paying the sheriff 10 bucks for a piece of paper saying I can buy a handgun. Once I get that in the next week or so I'm going to buy one pretty quickly.
I've been looking mainly at .45s because they are meeping awesome. I want to spend around five or six hundred but am ok going higher (>1k) if the piece warrants it. Right now I've got it down to two choices, the RIA tactical and the Para Ordnance GI expert. I'm leaning heavily toward the GI expert at this point. Anyone have opinions on this as a first gun? Yes/Yes?

SIg Sauer P250. They also make a compact version of this one that is nice if you decide you want to carry it concealed later.
Edit: Not sure why that link doesn't work...

Para makes a great pistol, but I don't know how much better it can be than the Rock Island. I prefer the RIA beavertail to the Para. Other than that, it's mostly about looks - in which case I wish the RIA was reverse of what it is (stainless slide and blued frame). Tough choice bro.
I'd also consider a Taurus 1911 w/ a rail. Like this - meeping BOSS

FN 57 ; 20 rds in a standard clip or 30 rds in the extended model means you'll have twice as much ammo as anyone else.

I'm definitely going 1911-style for my first gun. I do want to eventually get a carry gun, probably a Sig or Glock. The FN would be ridiculous right now for me.

If would reccomend a colt combat commander, it's a little smaller than the regular 1911 and only 7 shots, but an all around great shooter.
I bought these CF grips because I thought they looked nice, but I want to get some hogue grips and the sights reworked.

I am a fan of the Para subcompact 1911s like the Warthawg/nitehawg. If you are not looking for something though I understand(kimber ultra carry II is similar in price but lacks the capacity the warthog will have[10rds of .45ACP!]).
You might want to get check out the some of the Kimber models. While the RIA piece might save you some dough, this may be one of the rare cases when buying an American made product may actually be the best. Remember, you get what you pay for.

The 1911 will kick harder than the 57.
Truth be told, parts and ammo will be much easier to find for the .45 than the eurogun.
Man up and buy em both.
Or for a 1000 dollars you can get this and have the core component to your very own GECK!

Unless the Para goes out of stock next week I'm getting it. I made my mind up almost as soon as I posted this thread.
I'm probably going to look at carry guns next, and therein lies the great question: Sig or Glock?

^ I agree with this.
Although I've fired a couple of Glock's that were regular shooters and they seemed pretty worn and sloppy to me... so one may want to consider that. Not a bad gun at all but probably not something you'd want to take to the range every weekend.

FN Herstal - FNP9. This was my first handgun -

Lighter than a Glock 19, very smooth shooting. 16+1 round capacity, buying new comes with 3 magazines, a gun lock, interchangeable grip piece (for comfort/best fit) and a case. Approaches the large side for concealment, but it can be. I conceal mine in the small of my back; it can be seen if i bend over. (I don't know why that 2nd picture is backwards...I'm stealing it from another website)

XD-M 40. 16+1 of .40 (the 9mm is 19+1). The 3.8" XD-M is .4 inches OAL shorter than the 4" FNP9. The FNP9 is lighter. XD-M only has two mags.

Nice!
To be honest,I hate getting into the whole "that gun is not a defense gun" etc...because to me,any gun is a defense gun.If I'm in my house, and you happen to be stupid enough to try to enter it in some kind of way, every mother meeping gun in my house is my defense weapon.I will shoot a mother meeper until they stop moving,no matter what type of gun.(Ohio now has a shoot to kill law.Homeowners aren't liable anymore, for the most-part.)(Thank the good spag monster...)
CCW arguments are all fine and dandy to me,but when your at home, the weapon of choice should be the weapon your most comfortable with.
Next swarmer to show up on my doorstep can show me how it's done on the range.

The idea of a gun meant for home defense, isn't that only some guns can kill intruders, but that certain guns are notably more reliable than others. Usually a revolver is recommended for use when relying on a pistol for home defense as jamming is far less frequent and the grip is much stronger (harder to be pried/knocked out of your hands).
Personally, I'd recommend a shotgun with birdshot for home defense. If nothing else, the sound of racking a shell from a pump action is usually deterrent enough for any invader. Plus the need for accuracy is less and should you have friends / family /neighbors near by, you're less likely to kill one of them through a wall with a wayward shot.
