insomnia sufferers anon

Lately I've been having one of my bouts of insomnia, and whilst lying awake for 3 hours got me thinking about all the other sufferers who are doing the same thing at the same time everywhere else.

according to wiki I suffer from transient onset insomnia, and I can pretty much nail the cause down to stress and a poor diet that involves a lot of stimulants such as caffeine. I suppose I could sort out the diet problem but I'm well known for being and lazy and that would require effort, and the stress factor can't be helped, there's some hard times in the nurg family at the moment so I'm wondering If those swarmers who suffer from this as well (I know there's at least a few) have any hints or advice to pass on.

Apart from whacking one out or just getting down and dirty with the wief, is there anything the average joe can do? I've started having a beer before bed, perhaps stupidly reasoning that a depressive drug will somehow slow down the billion thoughts going through my head at lights out, but it doesn't seem to have a huge effect, but I won't let that stop me enjoying a beer before bed. counting won't help, because I just start overthinking the act of actually counting.

Frequently, I wake between three and six hours after I fall asleep, and find it quite difficult to fall asleep. I should go meep around in chat. My whole family including siblings and kids do this.I recommend hemp.I don't mean a big dose. A slight one, that induces sleepiness more than euphoria.(That is, if you have that option) Sleepytime Tea, Celestial seasonings. Melatonin supplements. There's a lot of stuff you can do. The other night I drank 4 shots of vodka for the first time in 7 or so years. Slept like a baby for 8 hours.Go figure. Good luck man, losing sleep will erode a person to his core.

There are herbs you can try like kava kava, which is pleasent enough, but you build tolerance. I've had good luck with amino acids. L-Arginine helps me sleep for some reason. It's not it's purpose, and isn't mentioned in that way the way L-Tryptophan is.

And yes, the caffeine would have to go. if only for awhile. wean off it, especially later in the day, though you prolly already knew that.

Take a good vit. B complex.

Cutting down on the carbs before bedtime helps me a lot. I had pizza about 20 minutes before bed last night and tossed and turned for like 3hrs. Edit: Keeping the house cool seems to help too.

^ This.

I've had some success Melatonin when I run into a bout of insomnia. It is expensive, though.

Deep relaxation techniques probably work better than anything for me. Worrying about getting to sleep will meep you up every time. Taking time to mentally relax my entire body (via the many relaxation/meditation techniques laying around the web) has probably been my best friend when it comes to dealing with insomnia.

Sometimes a couple shots of Jack do the trick but it's certainly not the healthiest way to go. Some form of sleeping pill would probably be better but I hate taking prescription drugs.

Beer works.

I've had insomnia since 8 years old and I've tried Melatonin, Lunesta, Unisom, Benadryl, tea, hot baths, reading, hypnosis and acupuncture.

The only thing that works consistently is beer.

You might be suffering from the early stages of fatal familial insomnia, or sporadic fatal insomnia, but try not to think about that while you're lying awake all night.

All my life I have had problems with tucking myself into bed and falling asleep within minutes. Not just any ol' sleep, but deep, relaxing sleep that lasts all night long. When I wake up, I feel as if I've sunk into my mattress and have to pull myself out. Then, I have to go through the entire day feeling like a million bucks.

Life sucks.

Melatonin, Valerian and Lunesta all taken together seems to work for me.

hmmm, when you (I) think about it, life really isn't too bad for me at the moment, the weather's nice at least

Two chloral-hydrates and three doubles of whiskey works for me every time.

WEED USE THIS YOU CAN"T DIE FROM THIS BY TAKING TOO MUCH.

Caffeine is one of those drugs that I think some people can handle a lot of, and drives other people crazy. I know people that drink coffee all day, and work all day, and sleep like a rock. But if I have a sip of coffee after 5-I am guaranteed to be up to at least 2 and to sleep meepty afterward. Years and years of experience with this seems to show this isn't going to change.

Kavakava, Valerian-all of these things can't substitute for decent exercise a few times a week or meditation. But they work. Melatonin gives me insane dreams, and I generally don't trust it-though I used it for years. Alcohol knocks you out but it just doesn't compare to real, restful sleep.

JohnLenin: Diet and exercise.

Precisely. ^

Benadryl/diphenahydramine is safe but I wouldn't rely on it all the time. Same thing with melatonin.

Alcohol, while it enables you to actually fall asleep, really prevents you from entering the stage II/III sleep that you actually need to benefit from sleep at all.

A wise doctor told me once that if I couldn't fall asleep after 15 minutes of laying in bed, to get my meep up and read a book or something. "Beds are for sleep and meep" he said, "that is it."

1/2 brownie at about 6pm will zonk me hard by about 10pm.

Dr. Rehab told me the same thing.
