Bug Out

So, I thought it might be fun to assemble a bug-out-bag. The kind of bag you grab as you feel the glow from a rising mushroom cloud in the distance and start running for your meeping life. I ended up getting a medium-sized USGI surplus ALICE pack. Like this:

NOW, here's the question: what do you put in/on a bug-out-bag?

OK...GO!

Decider: Admin

ummm...matches, beans, a knife, and porn.

If that mothermeeper was into doing anything besides make meep tons of money, they'd be less than $170 bucks a pop. meep him and meep that bottle.

One thing they stressed during desert survival training was that you never take a bic lighter, always carry a zippo instead. They don't explode and are a lot more rugged. Keep it well soaked and store a spare flint and spring under the pad.

Flint and steel and magnesium fire starters are really kind of dumb. You can start thousands of fires with a single Bic lighter at a cost of maybe $2. Putting about 5 of these in a waterproof bag guarantees you years and years of worry free, trouble free fire starting.

There really is no reason to use these other 'survivalist' fire starting devices unless you think it's cool or something. Magnesium starters don't last very long and flint and steel are a pain in the meep to use. Bic lighters will light even after being submerged in water as long as you spend a few minutes drying the flint and striker. I can't think of a single legitimate reason to use anything else.

Ok, how about you impress me with your ultra heteroness and provide me with one valid reason to use one of these 'survivalist' gimmicks to start fires instead of a Bic lighter.

CRACKHEADS CONCUR!

I actually have a magnesium/steel bar I have bought in Alaska and have used for 15 years. Last time i used it was last fall when we went camping. It was rainy and wet, but with some birch bark and brown pine needles, I started a fire in a jif. Yeah, I guess I do think they are cool. More importantly, they work.

No lube please, I prefer a 'dry rub'.

Ok, let me get this image straight in my head... do we land on top of each other?

Luckily, Bic lighters don't break like this. They're pretty robust little devices. I smoked cigs for close to 30 years and never broke a Bic.

These magnesium and flint starters are great tv props but in reality they are just not as good a tool as a simple (cheap) package of disposable lighters. They are much more expensive and don't start anywhere near as many fires.

You wouldn't choose a sharpened bone over a knife would you? Or a stick over a good .22 rifle. Just sayin'.

jesus christ. we're not falling into each other you idiot. i've had many lighters meep up on me from losing the flint+spring or having the wheel holders break. maybe not for you, but those things break all the meeping time.

a knife will malfunction a lot less than a gun will.

i'm not saying those things aren't useful, but in a truly meep hits the fan situation i wouldn't just grab (a) lighter(s), i'd want something else as backup.

but by all means, knock yourself out.

Hay, can you PM me regarding the time we fell down together in the leaves? I'd like to hear more of that story.

If you were deep in the Brazilian rainforest and came across a tribe of savages that had never been exposed to civilization before, I bet you could whip out your Bic and become a God to them. Oh yeah, and I bet all the women savages would be short stacked redheads.
