Questions about Linkswarm

I couldn't find an appropriate forum for this, so me start new one. Perhaps this will be valuable in the future (perhaps not).

I just submitted a link and got the 'there are 1 links ahead of you in the queue' message. On the front page, I see that there are 0 links in the queue. Does every alpha see every link that is swarmed, or is there a selection process for voters.

Not all links go to the AQ. Some go to the main queue, where there are currently 2 links. One of them is yours.

1) Yes, some links don't hit the AQ. They go to what I've always called the main queue because it's the original queue that existed before I built the AQ. The main queue doesn't see as much action so nothing sits in there longer than four hours without moving to the AQ. These days it's mostly there to catch likely spam so the AQ doesn't have to deal with it.

2) The "X links ahead of you in the queue" message doesn't do a real great job of telling you which queue. The message on the front page telling Alphas how many links are pending their vote doesn't count their own links, and it doesn't count links they've voted on. Looking now, there are two links in the main queue -- yours and Lownotes' -- so that accounts for the one ahead of you. I see 8 links pending in the AQ, 6 of which you've voted on, and two so new they have no votes at all, so they must not have been in the queue when you looked. So when you looked and saw 0, the AQ had nothing in it you hadn't already voted on or submitted yourself.

Some feature razzmatazz...

  • Future AQ will be the only queue.
  • Future AQ will show you your own pending links no matter who you are.
  • Future AQ will let you comment on pending links if you are an Alpha or the link's submitter.
  • Future AQ will show you links you've already voted on that are still pending in the queue, and let you change those votes if you've changed your mind.

What is the purpose of the "security" tag? I thought it meant anti-virus/spyware stuff, but I suppose that would fall under the 'internet' tag. I see it being used where the violence tag should go.

O WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME ?????

It's definitely meant for anti-virus/spyware/hacker meep -- i.e., Computer Security.

That said, it's kind of a niche category, and could probably be folded into Internet.

IE 9 beta does this, but only on a 64-bit Win 7 system...

How weird is that?

Good to know. So you've tried to reproduce it on a different platform and can't? Which one(s)?

Also, check if the affected instance is in Compatibility Mode, which mimics lesser versions so completely that it triggers IE-sniffing conditional comments like, for example, if lt IE 8.

IE 9 on 32-bit Win 7 doesn't show this. IE 8 on win-7 64-bit doesn't either. Compatibility mode doesn't either.

Another quirk with IE 9 (any OS) is the drop-down menus at top-of-page misalign and can't be used.

...but hey - it's still in beta.

I've always been bicurious as to how the voting point system for which links get selected works.

It's a race. There are thresholds for each action -- say, links need 5 + votes to get approved and 6 - votes to get rejected. If a link has 4 + votes and 5 - votes and you come along and hit +, it's approved. If, as you go to click +, someone else zips in and hits - before your mouse meepon registers your click, the link gets rejected and then your eventual vote milliseconds later has egg on its face.
