Dude, stockpile rice, jerky, twinkies and canned goods from the local Spartan or IGA. That meep is cheap as meep and lasts forever. MRE's bind a mothermeeper up so bad that living on them for months would require a fistable meep just to survive.

I was just reading online, and apparently these things only have a shelf life of about three years. If this is accurate you might want to come up with another plan of action.

Ok after more reading it seems like the shelf life is more like 10-15 years. Go figure.

As a card carrying Apocalypsitarian, I feel that it is my duty to inform you that MREs are a bad idea.

A. They are over priced. You are looking at about 7.00 / meal. Assuming you arent really trying to find some uniformed bean counter to 'lose' some for you and then you are just as much meepgot as the meepkicker who stole them in the first place.

B. They are NOT good for you. I have lived on these things for 8 months at a time on two separate occasions and several other smaller intervals as well. Each unit contains ~1500 calories which is far too much to take in one sitting, but given the hyperdense portions you are somehow compelled to eat the entire thing. You feel like meep afterwards, and given the ridiculous amount of sodium / preservatives, your water intake increases drastically. This will be verified afterwards when you meep hard little billiard meep. (++wotak)

C. They taste like meep. Once the novelty wears off, youll just ratmeep them for the meals/items that suck less than the rest.

If youre really into some sort of food contingency: here Otherwise, sams club: 20 lb bags of rice, oatmeal, dried milk, instantized eggs, and some sort of instantized vitamin/vegetable supplement.

I would also suggest gardening.

I'm telling you, if you want apocalyptic food storage that is the best quality and cheapest price you must befriend a Mormon.

The LDS Church runs a 'welfare' program that is awesome, if you are poor and Mormon. Anyway, if you are a member you can go by canned dried goods from these locations through out the U.S., on the cheap too, son. Cans I posses (whole wheat, sugar, oatmeal, etc etc. boast a 30 yr shelf life when stored in 70-80degree weather).

I wish I could find a list of items for the place....maybe I can.
