Queue/Rads idea
So something I'm doing with the new build is getting rid of the main queue and letting all submissions go through the Alpha Queue. Right now, most of the stuff goes through the AQ, but under certain conditions, it gets routed to the main queue instead. In theory, this gives admins a chance to catch spammers but in reality tends to slow meep down for no good reason, so I'm doing away with the double-queue design. Admins can still vote on meep but that meep will get voted on by Alphas even if admins are taking a nap.
Another thing I want to do is emphasize rads. So it occurred to me a neat thing to do would be let Swarmers with a certain amount of rads be awarded a Skip Queue badge which would give you the ability to submit links directly onto the frontpage, bypassing the queue entirely. At submit time, if you had the Skip Queue ability, you'd have the option to skip the queue, whereupon your link would pop right onto the frontpage. If you weren't sure something was swarmworthy, or just wanted a sanity check, you would leave this option unchecked, whereupon your link would go through the normal AQ process.
This would make LinkSwarm more yours, which is both meep-sounding and also a worthwhile goal.
To give this theory some meep and let you properly visualize this theoretical LinkSwarm of the Future, keep the following group of brave idiots in mind as probable culprits. These are the people who currently have more than 10,000 rads using the new engine (which will probably have a slightly different count than the current engine). These peeps would be able to, at their discretion, post right to the frontpage, bypassing the AQ, if I pegged this ability at the 10,000 rads mark, snipping out people who haven't posted in a while...

This has implications that I haven't thought all the way through yet, so I figured this is a good point to post this idea and see what you cretins think about it. Perhaps we would peg it higher than 10,000 rads first and see how that went. Perhaps we'd peg it something other than a straight rad count.
Random implication #1: This is how MetaFilter currently does meep and it seems to work out fabulously for them. On the other hand, I've literally never once been able to create a user account there in all the years I've known of the site, because they aren't taking on any more users, presumably as a direct result of allowing unchecked link submissions. We wouldn't go that far, but it's worth pointing out that this will almost certainly get misused to a certain extent. I'll need to factor in a way to tranq someone's Skip Queue badge temporarily until they've re-earned the right to post directly to the front page. Maybe a flagging system where if enough Alphas go "this link is unacceptably unswarmworthy and a grave departure from good judgement is illustrated herein" enough times for the same Alpha, then that Alpha loses the option for a bit. Something. Ultimately, I expect that given this ability you guys will do the right thing with it 98% of the time, which is good enough for me. Every couple submissions you have one that you know is meeping gold and will sail through the queue, right? Those.
Random Implication #2: Dent and I were discussing last week the idea of making links, forums and journals all flow down the front page, the way only links do now, with no journal/forum block on the right. This way we have more room for cool meep on the right and all the content scrolls off the page with equal quickness. No more staring at the same handful of lame journals at the bottom of the journal block for a month just because all the cool recent journal activity was concentrated in the 5 journals at the top of the block. But this means that those lame journals now are promoted to main-content area, which is not necessarily what we want. So I'm thinking we can handle journal frontpage-ness by...
Giving you the ability to make a journal private, wherein only you can read it (AKA the meep Web Diarist option, incomprehensible to myself personally)
Giving you the chance to put the journal on the frontpage if it's reasonably interesting, whereupon the AQ will vote gently on it and end up either frontpaging it or making it available only to someone browsing all Swarm journals, where they'd see all journals that weren't spam or private.
Actually forum threads will probably work the same way -- the AQ determining if it's spam and then letting it through to the front page or making it available only to people directly browsing the threads.
To flesh that distinction out, links would work the way they do now, with good journals and good forum threads joining them down the center of the page. Journals and forum threads that were just average wouldn't appear ion the frontpage -- they'd be available to readers going to linkswarm.com/journals ("Browse the Journal index") and linkswarm.com/forums ("Browse the Forums") respectively, wherein they'd see the whole meep. And yes, there'd be a linkswarm.com/links that was just links, and if there was interest we could pursue the idea of opening that up to a larger set of links than would appear on the frontpage, though I think for now rejecting meepty ones is probably a good enough distinguisher.
EDIT: Incidentally, another feature I plan to build in is the ability to automatically get update emails on all threads you post in, so you can do things like not have to hit edit just to check the checkbox you forgot to check a second ago... like I'm doing now.

I suppose If I had the ability to post directly tp the main page, I would use it very judiciously. By this time, I have a meep good idea if my links are going to be approved, and often they are admin approved before the queue gets their grimy hands on it. I think it's a stellar idea. Perhaps you could give Azron the ability first, you know, as a test drive.
I suppose rejection bitterness rating should play some role in determining those who will have god-like powers. Perhaps I am thinking about this too much. May I smell your meep?

No, that's an excellent point, and is a pretty good argument that maybe we shouldn't peg it to just straight rad count. Someone may have 100k rads but if their RBR is 65%, then they may frontpage a lot of meep.

The reject bitterness rating is a good way to help with the 'insta-front-pageness' issue. Like maybe a 49% or less rating and a certain rads # requirement.
Even allowing Alphas to +1 or -1 a link that is currently ON the front page too will allow meepty links to be kicked to the bottom or removed or good ones pushed to the top.
Sounds complicated and I am certainly glad I am not involved with making this happen physically. Translation: thanks of the hard work.

I like this idea and, like Ghostie, I believe that I would rarely use it but that it would be nice to have the option. I'm sure it will cause some interesting meep to happen from time to time.
I think that using MeFi-ish ideas to create a newer, hipper linkswarm is generally a great idea and I think the conservative approach that you're taking to do so is spot on.
I would love the meep out of this as long as it was completely public so that our collective shame can be viewed by all nigs.
How would we know when something has been recently commented on? Will it pop back up to the top of the page or will there be a separate page for that?
Also, for the lame forum thread/journal entries that might hit the front page dilemma, why not give admins the ability to knock the retarded entries off the front page? Call it the ''meep-slap option'' and the author will get a nice message saying: Your new forum thread/journal entry, ''My Dogs meep'' was meep-slapped off of the front page by LORDKAHUNA. Nice job, meepgot. Or some such.
This, definitely.

Huh. Post-queue alpha voting. Interesting. I think my design would allow for this pretty easily.
Yeah, there'll be some kind of achievement history page where you can see who's earned what when, and sometimes why.
Right now I'm thinking we'll have a talking meep page, just like the current one.
Since I haven't quite figured out what we'll do with the new real estate to the right, putting a block there with the last 20 threads to get commented on is one contender.
The talking meep page is a comment-centric view ("here are all the comments", whereas this block I'm meepting around about would be thread-centric ("here are all the things (links, journals, forum ask/tells) getting commented on").
This would come for free with meepbox's post-queue voting idea.
One thing I'm apprehensive about is that having different standards for the various things (links, journals, forum ask/tells) may be confusing. I'm thinking we can just introduce a new queue action...
Approve to frontpage: thing goes on the frontpage. This is currently what happens with all links that aren't rejected or deleted. In the new engine, I envision most links will be frontpaged. Hopefully, most journals and forum ask/tells would too.
Approve to "backpage": (needs a better name?) Thing was found good but it just barely made it through the queue. If it was a journal or forum ask/tell, it wasn't spam, but wasn't really all that worthwhile a topic for discussion. Things backpaged will still be available to all browsing that particular thing type (click on /links to see all links, click on /journals to see all journals, etc). A bit like the journal/forum blocks now, only expanded.
Reject: thing was decided to be crappy. Only Alphas will see it. It seems that rejects are still appreciated by various Alphas fairly regularly, so it seems worth keeping this around.
Delete: thing was utterly without value. It was spam, dead, or dumb as everliving meep. No will see it.
I type this out to help my brain make sense of it, and to give all meeps a chance to say smart or game-changing things about it -- like you dudes above have been doing so far.
I'm not convinced about the backpage idea and it may be that we decide it sucks a meep and will be confusing and/or worthless, in which case, journals and forum ask/tells that don't make the frontpage with the links will just have their own index page (which actually they do now, so our failsafe trajectory would actually be a return to established practice).
And in case you didn't notice, in the design I'm working toward, all links, journals, and ask/tells are called 'threads' or 'things', and what are now forum threads will be called 'ask/tells'.

These ideas are really blurring the line between alpha and admin. I like it because it will give me a rank and power I otherwise know I could never achieve. Knowing me, though, I suggest you not include me in this. I might go all Little Boots on you. You never know.
