Chex overdosed

Chex's fiancee Patty was kind enough to find us in IRC and let us know that Chex, AKA Maciej Danielewicz, passed away Monday morning from a heroin overdose. The internet being what it is, I went looking for an obituary or news clipping on it, and couldn't find anything, but a couple of us have him on Facebook and there are RIP notes and such.

Those of you who have kept up with his hijinks know that Chex had a rollicking history spanning the gamut from bank robbery to teaching children how to read. His various felonies and incarcerations always seemed wierd and hilarious to me; I only knew him as this self-contained, sweet guy, like a polish buddha, who drove all the way from Michigan to Boston by himself for BBP 5.2, not knowing anybody but showing up for the party anyway. To be scientific about it, a big piece of his motivation there was hardcore marf-meeping, but it still counts as an act of bravery.

Chex was living in Pittsburgh but evidently his family has taken him home for the funeral, which is at...

Gorsline Runciman funeral home
1730 East grand river avenue
east lansing MI
Thursday at 6 pm

It'd be pretty rad if anyone who happens to be nearby showed up, thanked his parents, and took one last LinkSwarm Makes Me Wet picture with his casket. I bet he'd appreciate it.

EDIT: Here's the memorial page his parents put up -- as Clavis points out, visitation hours are at 5 at the funeral home.

vasudeva: For what it's worth, it just occurred to me that, having died of a heroin overdose, his last few moments probably felt insanely meeping awesome.

There are surely worser ways to go.

meep, meep, this sucks. At least he ain't suffering anymore.

I didn't know him but I could certainly relate. Was half-way expecting an IM from him after checking his journal again. The problems seem insurmountable and drugs appear to be the only solution. I need to wake the meep up. What was he, like 32? Shame. Over now. Condolences to the family.

I'm pretty sure his 25th birthday was coming up.

I think this confirms services on the 18th.

Ghost, if you're going to take the Amtrak, I think Hammond-Whiting & Michigan City are the closest stops to me. Let me know what time you'll be rolling in and I'll pick you up...if service starts at 6PM, that's 5PM our time, so we should be on the road by 1PM.

I'll print a Makes Me Wet sign. If anyone else has a Swarm related requests, let me know.

Wotak, you coming?

I had forgotten the whole ring/proposal journal. For any kind of user to save enough for love to give a ring is amazing. He really cared for that girl.

Good heart. Good soul. Good spirit.

We all stumble. Sometimes we don't get up.

As I washed down my morning fist full of Norco with a cup of whiskey and coffee, I barfed up this meaningless jumble of words...

Feather Wind, Blowing

Mineral Salts, Pain, Vein, Aorta, Synapses, Collapses

Despair, Don't Care, Where are They Now?

Gone Like Dust

Lost Children, Never Knowing How Much They Meant

The Hole in the Fabric Left

Like a Cigarette Burn

A Tear Drop Stain

A Spilled Drink

From a Forgotten Party

The Why is Unanswered

Only the When & How is Left

To Look at Like a Relic

Some Souvenir

Something in the Shelf of Your Memory

To Take Down and Admire as a Trophy or a Sorrow.

I also only knew him as an avatar/nic,but if he was half the person that most of you worthless piles of puke are,he was a good man.

Beachgoat, you always have a way with words,ya old bazztid.

It's kind of badass to see a few people in here are actually going to his service. It goes to show you that the line between RL and INET is blurring.

His fiancee said he talked about LS all the time. I kind of assumed it was just me, cause I come home with stories about the retarded meep you meepgots say all the time, but I guess he did the same thing.

Heather: I love you guys for making the trip and the hugs and the tears on my behalf. Thank you.

I'd like to say that it was my pleasure, but nothing could be further from the truth. It was a terrible day.

Wotak & I met for sushi & beers in East Lansing, near the funeral home, before the service. Despite being located in what was obviously an old Ponderosa steak house, the sushi was awesome. As we drank Newcastle on tap, we talked Linkswarm, chickens, and kids. Then we headed out to the funeral home. The food, the beers before & after, and our conversation were the only uplifting things I experienced in East Lansing.

I thanked his parents, on behalf of all of us, for what little time we had with their son. I shared with them a couple of my personal memories of him, and a few from others that have been discussed here since his death. I could tell that it was painful for them to hear these things, so I was brief. I hugged his mom, shook his dad's hand, and told them that I hope they're able to find some comfort and perhaps a little bit of peace in the love that so many people had for their little boy.

The service was lead by one of Pawel's colleagues from the university. His daughters grew up with Maciek, and it was apparent that he was quite fond of him. He spoke of a time when he, Pawel, and Chex were in Europe for a conference. In between workshops, they hit the Alps for some skiing. Chex's gift for skiing came at a very young age, and he was in awe at how fearless he was on the slopes and how he admired the kid's lust for life.

Patty spoke briefly, haltingly, holding a stuffed animal that Chex had from the time he was very small. It was gut wrenching to hear her talk of the void in her life without him. She was very strong, and very brave, and I hugged her for all of us after the service.

His mom, in spite of her best efforts, looked small...fragile...shattered. She was too overwrought to address the gathering. She instead played a moving piece by Chopin, and sobbed quietly for it's entirety.

His dad was trying to be strong for his prematurely smaller family, but was equally broken. When Pawel spoke during the service, he recounted Chex's life in timeline form. He sounded detached, wooden, as though he were lecturing on some archaic bit of academia. He started with what joy Maciek brought to he an Ewa's lives when he was born, through his remarkable success as a student and musician. He didn't shy away one iota from talking about Chex's difficulties with drugs and poor decisions. It was almost unnerving to hear a father speak of his son in such an abstract way. But as a parent, I understood. How else does a father speak of his beloved son, gone of the Earth before his time? I can scarcely imagine the meep of outliving a child.

Those of you who know me know that I'm not a praying man...I'm not religious and I don't believe in any gods. But I begin each day humbly begging the universe on my ever-loving knees with all the humility that I possess to please spare me that horror. I know that my pleas are unheard, but it helps me to be the best man I can be for them. It reminds me to never take them for granted because, despite my best intentions and efforts, I may not always have them.

I miss him, but I'm still saddest for his folks. Nobody deserves to lose a kid.

Clavis, you meep, you are not supposed to make a grown man cry.

Thank You.

Clavis_Apocalypticae: (Beautiful words)

Well said, Brother, and a pretty complete account of the service.

Chex's Mom putting that Chopin piece on was what brought tears to my face but I could totally understand her heart melting comment when she said that she felt that piece could say more than she could about her son's life. Sometimes music has a way of saying the things we just can't say. That piece said a lot to me but I'm sure it said a lifetime more to her.

On 2010-04-11 at 02:15:04, Wotak asked to smell your meep

I got word from Patty yesterday that Maciek was finally buried in Poland yesterday. Dunno why they waited a day shy of 5 months to put him in the ground, must be some orthodox thing.

I spilled a beer for him last night.
