Toaster build. We have a winner! Thanks everybody!

Here's where you post your entries, gentlemen.

Win this one-of-a-kind pirate-style chest.
Perfect for hiding your porn stash, pot, corporate bonuses, etc.

It measures 16" wide x 11" deep x 13-1/2" tall.
It's 1" thick maple banded in 1/8" steel, has custom built handles and a fully functional period-accurate(as far as I know) custom warded lock and key set.

All said, about $1500 worth of my time and material.

Once again the rules are:
1. Your toaster must cook two slices of crispy toast.
2. Said toast must be edible by someone of reasonable sanity.
-Therefore I recommend a timer of some sort.
3. Though you can scavenge parts from any goddamned thing in existence, NO parts from an actual toaster may be used.

Post your video or pics of the build and the machine in action here.
If yours is voted the coolest, or if (as I'm beginning to think) yours is the only one; the prize is yours.

Deadline is May 1st.

cool, I cant wait for the young einsteins to post pics.

What a great prize!

So, here is what we have:

7 Curling Irons 2 Wire Racks 1 "Diet" Scale 1 Party Hat 1 Partial erector set 1 "soft touch" momentary switch 1 bowl of salt

I used the salt and party hat and scale as a sand timer. I used the timer to power on the erector set via the switch. I used the set to pull out the toast from the curling iron heating elements. I didnt think to time it, but it doesn't seem THAT long, and the toast came out pretty good.

So... thats my toaster.

OH, and the top heats too, so you can do both halves of a bagel at once. Do the smaller bottom half inside and put the top half face-down on top of the toaster!

Steel made fairly steady progress and kept us entertained by nearly electricuting himself and smoking up his house.

Saltpeter came in late, but did manage to cobble together a timer.

Both succeeded in the creation of crispy toast.

Okay kiddies. Put yer tools down. It's time to put it to a vote.

What say you, Linkswarm? Steel or Saltpeter?

As much as I meeping love me some Steel, and as much as I enjoyed his toaster journal, it really comes down to who hit closer to the bullseye as defined by the contests patriarch...

The timer totally edged the new alpha into the lead and even though I want to donate the remainder of my unused dignity to Steel (dramatic pause) I have to vote for the saltpeter.

(Put a video up, meeper, or I'll -7 this vote and flip-flop on your meep.)

+1 for the saltpeter

On 2010-05-03 at 01:57:37, Wotak asked to smell your meep

I gotta vote for Steel. He built a toaster from something not intended to heat anything. Both are brilliant, and beyond my capacity, but Steel showed up firstest with the mostest,

Both entries show a sign of ingenuity and perseverence .

If not already, both entrants should be designing new products for consumers. The computer toaster would be a wild option.

It is very hard to choose between the two but my vote goes with satpeter.

saltpeter's entry has my vote.

Steel's toaster is completely awesome, but in all honesty the Rube Goldberg style erector set/party hat/curling iron arrangement is just too brilliant for me to vote against - not to mention the dramatic last-minute dark-horse entrance, and the reported bagel compatibility just cinches it.

steel

Steel gets my vote. Much more post-appoccalyptic in my view.

I vote Stool, and I'm glad I didnt have to carry his stupid casket.

In the absence of video on Saltpeter's part I say Steel.

Steel took action shots at least. Saltpeter's project still just looks like a pile of parts until I see proof of concept.

So here they are:

Congratulations once again to Steel. (Really, I mean it this time) I'll be shipping the box today.

Thanks for your help everybody. This was actually kinda fun.

It is not possible for me to express all that I feel of appreciation for what has been said and given to me. I accept, for myself, with the conviction of having received far beyond what I have been able to give with the story of my iToaster. I can only hope that the many journals and thread which I have yet to write in and the links I have yet to submit will be in some measure a worthier acknowledgment than I can make tonight. Whatever I accomplish in the future must, I think, be always benefited and strengthened when I remember this day.

I accept, too, for my country, Canada. We are a people still young and we know that we have not yet come to the fullest of our powers. This award, given to a peninsula-haired Canuck, strengthens not only one, but all Canadians, who are encouraged and heartened by such generous recognition.

I should not be truly myself if I did not, in my own wholly unofficial way, speak also of Saltpeter, whose life has for so many years been looking forward to this moment and who's life, indeed, will now always be a part of mine. The minds of Steel and Saltpeter, are alike in many ways, but above all, alike in our common love of freedom and toast. Today more than ever, this is true, now when Saltpeter's whole being is engaged in the greatest of all struggles, the struggle of defeat. I have never admired Saltpeter more than I do now, when I see her rising up as she has never before, to be the best Swarmer that she can possible be. With this determination for excellence, which is in so profound a sense the essential quality in her nature, I know that next time she will be unconquerable.

Linkswarm - it is today that I have received the most precious of human possessions, your acknowledgement and a sweet meep pirate chest. Today I greet you with a peculiar fellowship, you whose wisdom is ancient and elite.

Thanks to you all!

Oh... and thank you baby jesus!

I have never admired Saltpeter more than I do now, when I see her rising up as she has never before, to be the best Swarmer that she can possible be.

Um... Not a female! Mostly male, in fact. Despite the curling irons. I'll just add that little bit of embarrassment and shame to the rest of the pile, I think.

Best double-unboxing vid EVAR.

It made me think of this:

There will be another contest Jan 1st. Same format. Same prize.(Probably a little fancier design though: Carving, Brass keys, Suprise inside, etc) -Plus second place will get a little trophy or sumthin'.

I'm thinking the project will be one of the following: 1. Potato gun 2. Mini Medieval Weapon/Torture Implement of your choice 3. Mini Suit of Armor(say for a dog, cat -or the Boba Fett doll that's seen the inside of your colon) 4. ....What can you make?
