Build a toaster and win THIS.

Here's the prize gentlemen:

A one-of-a-kind pirate-style chest.
Perfect for hiding your porn stash, pot, corporate bonuses, etc.

It measures 16" wide x 11" deep x 13
1/2" tall.
It's 1" thick maple banded in 1/8" steel, has custom built handles, lock, keys(2) and weighs in at a mere 42 Lbs.

All said, about $1500 worth of my time and material.

Just make a bad-meep or funny toaster from non-toaster parts, submit a video or pics here: http://www.linkswarm.com/forums/56866/toaster-build-we-have-a-winner-thanks-everybody/ by May 1st, and this is yours.

This is awesome. It totally rocks the fuk out of the knock-off chest we bought at the pottery barn.

I wish I could build a toaster. The I only thing I can build is peoples expectations of me. Then I knock them down.

Thanks Hobo.
Phlebas: Impressive work. You should think about posting a little Fabrication Porn for the manufacturing geeks.

Thanks, Phlebas. I'll do that.

Bobacus: Nice pirates chest ,captain. My granddad could carve like that. Nice work indeed.

Thanks Bob.

Now seriously, I'd like to know who(if anyone) is going to be in this contest.

I am in.

You are going to have to ship that chest to Australia.

I'm in. What is the submission deadline?

middle_age_man: I'm in. What is the submission deadline?

I'm thinking the first of April, but if folks need more time, we can go May 1st. (Doesn't anybody read the text that goes with the pretty pictures these days)

I'm in, if i get sufficient spare time at work.

MistaCharisma: I'm in, if i get sufficient spare time at work.

Welcome aboard M.C.!

That's three.

C'mon folks, I'm hoping we can get at least two or three more people in.

Only a one-in-three chance of cheap postage so far.

That's okay. Just hope the import tax guy doesn't value it very high, so you can afford to pick it up.

Wait, nevermind. I checked with UPS and I think it's taken care of at my end. Meanwhile, I've gotten the cage done and now I'm just waiting for the varnish to dry before I can finally put it all together.

I want that chest, but I can't find the original thread with the conditions. Link?

Alright RP! Let's see if you're as good with practical stuff as you are debating astrophysics.

The rules as of now are: 1. Your toaster must cook two slices of crispy toast. 2. Said toast must be edible by someone of reasonable sanity. -Therefore I recommend a timer of some sort. 3. Though you can scavenge parts from any goddamned thing in existence, NO parts from an actual toaster may be used.

You simply post pics or video of your toaster and it's features here on linkswarm, and it will be judged by popular vote.

If anyone is interested in how the internals to your typical toaster works, I found this article to be pretty fukkin obvious, but i'll share anyway:

You got it. http://www.linkswarm.com/forums/56453/building-a-treasure-chest-lock-and-all/ BTW, that meeping yellow was throwing me off my stroke, so I took it back apart, sanded it down and stained it darker before hitting it with proper varnish this time. It's damp out, so it'll be awhile before it's dry. Again.

I just finally checked back. Thank you, sir.

There. I'm done refinishing that goddamned box. If anyone's into woodworking, allow me to warn you that maple is a mothermeeper to get a good finish on.

BTW, It's been a couple of weeks now since we started this. Anyone made any progress on their entries?

spankerchief: Anyone made any progress on their entries?

I have located most of my supplies. Now it's just a matter of getting them together and bending some metal.

Anyone else working on this in any seriousness?

And where should we post video of this toaster in action?

Good question. How about putting them in the Projex forum?

I will build mine in the last five minutes as usual. I do know what I am to build though.

Hmm....I guess shipping to the other meeping side of the planet isn't all that bad.

!

Special Clearance Requirements Wood and Products made of Wood: Wooden furniture and other wooden products should be fumigated prior to export. Shipments should include a Fumigation Certificate issued by a fumigation inspector to avoid delays. The Fumigation Certificate should be attached to the shipping domeepentation. All items made of wood, cane, bamboo and rattan imported into Australia must undergo quarantine checks, which could add 1 to 2 days of delay. For solid wood packing and dunnage, AQIS will require mandatory compliance with ISPM 15. This can either be in the form of a phytosanitary certificate or an IPPC logo.

In the event of non-compliance , the package will be treated, destroyed or re-exported. Charges will apply in these instances.

^This was the only hang up I could find. What the meep? Am I supposed to throw a bug bomb into it and close the lid? Call a fumigation guy and have him tent it like a little house?

Edit: I called the local Orkin Man(Pest control guy) He said for a couple of bucks he'd be happy to toss it in the next house he tents and write me a cert for it. meep, that was easier than I expected.

Side note: Never forgave us for that whole cane toad thing, have you Australia?

On 2010-03-18 at 04:52:30, spankerchief asked to smell your meep

Not just the cane toads.

Seriously, we don't have a lot of the diseases or parasites that cause problems in the rest of the world because of things like this. Don't try to bring your dog here for a four week holiday, 'cos Rover will spend at least six weeks in Quarantine, keeping us free of rabies. Likewise, we don't have things like carpenter ants or deathwatch beatles, 'cos we insist on all timber and timber products being fumigated.

My old Dad used to import timber from the States by the cubic metre, so it is no big deal as long as the paperwork is straight.

^ I was just thinking about this. I can picture it now: Me surfing a 10-footer off Port Mac. Ahhhhh.... Suddenly I bump into a box jellyfish, the stinging tentacles sending waves of burning agony through my legs. My wild thrashing draws the attention of a passing great white, which slams me off my board, countless rows of teeth shredding my torso for a couple of seconds before letting me go. I struggle to the shoreline and my feet reach sand for a few steps before I step on a blue ring octopus with my right foot and a stonefish with my left. The pain drops me on my meep where a barrier reef coneshell waits to harpoon me in the meep. Blinded now with pain and feeling the toxins eating my muscles and nerves, I stagger upshore and straight into a funnelweb. Screaming for help I tear the arachnid from my face and run blindly ahead, brownsnakes scoring my legs with their fangs. Finally the various toxins overwhelm me and as my eyesight dims I can just see the hungry dingos approaching... My last thought: "Thank God I don't have to... worry.... about ..........rabies...."

You forgot about the Taipans, Death Adders, and Redback spiders, not to mention the Sea-snakes.

This is a fun place to live, and we don't even have guns to defend ourselves against all these critters with.

But we die without foaming at the mouth.

I am sorry to say that I will not have my entry for this contest finished (started) in time, life has got in the way of me doing almost anything lately. Suffice to say it has been an interesting year so far.

Looks like Steel's gonna take it.

We'll see.

I've got something i'm trying to get done in time here, but I dont know if i'll make it. I got started a little late. Well... Really late.......

Anyone else still got something they are gonna submit?

I admit though, steel's is way meepy AND doubles as a PC Case Mod.
